Varsities begin verification of MPs degrees

LAHORE: Verification of academic degrees of the members of parliament (MPs) formally began on Thursday after various universities received copies of the degrees from the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan.
The Punjab University received the highest number of degrees, 313, including those of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan. The Karachi University has received over 100 degrees while over three dozen degrees have been sent to the Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU), Multan, by the HEC.
The PU had been asked to complete the verification process by July 13, 2010, an HEC official said. The PU Controller of Examinations, Prof Dr Zahid Karim, confirmed receiving 313 degrees on Thursday.
Meanwhile, PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran chaired an emergency meeting and constituted a seven-member committee, headed by Dean Faculty of Life Sciences Prof Dr Shahida Husnain, to verify the MPs degrees.
The official sources said the verification process would be foolproof and the special committee would recheck the degrees. Members of the committee included Dean Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences Prof Dr Muhammad Ehsan Malik, Dean Faculty of Commerce Prof Dr Liaqat Ali, Controller of Examinations Prof Dr Zahid Karim Khan, Additional Registrar-II Ahmad Ali Chattha, Additional Controller Malik Muhammad Zaheer and Deputy Controller Muhammad Rauf Nawaz.
The VC has directed the committee to complete the verification process by July 12. An official said the process would start from Friday (today) and holidays of Saturday and Sunday would not be availed by the staff concerned to complete the task on time.
The prominent among those whose degrees have been received by the PU for verification included Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira, and Minister for Food and Agriculture Nazar Muhammad Gondal.
The PPPs Jehangir Badr, Faisal Karim Kundi, Rana Farooq Saeed Khan, Samina Khalid Ghurki, Mehreen Anwar Raja; PML-Ns parliamentarians including Senator Raja Muhammad Zafarul Haq, Abid Sher Ali, Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, Hamza Shahbaz Sharif, Tehmina Daultana, Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, Khwaja Muhammad Asif, Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan and PML-Qs Senator Ch Shujaat Hussain, Ch Pervaiz Elahi, Senator Sardar Muhammad Jamal Khan Leghari, Mrs Sumaira Malik, Riaz Fatyana, Senator Tariq Azeem, Senator Wasim Sajjad and Senator SM Zafar.
The degrees of five members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and one of the Balochistan Assembly have also been received by the PU as these parliamentarians graduated from the Punjab University.
