Haha yeah that happens when you look at it in pictures but in reality its massive. So much so that at the time when it was built it was the largest mosque in the world besides the Ka'ba and the Masjid-e-Nabvi (or so we have been told). It's size becomes very apparent when you see it for yourself. Get this; the following pictures are of the Badshahi mosque in Lahore. Until the Faisal Mosque was built this mosque was the largest in the world. It's capacity is around 100,000 people and it's area is around 29,867.2 m².

Now compare this to the Faisal Mosque's capacity, 300,000 people, and it's area, around 43,295.8 m², and you'll realize how big the Faisal Mosque is. I believe right now it's the second largest mosque in the world.

wow 300,000 people

1. Masjid al-Nabawi (Saudi) 1,000,000 capacity.
2. Masjid al-Haram (Saudi) also around 1 million.
3. Imam Reza Shrine (Iran) 700,000
4. Faisal Mosque (Pakistan) 300,000

That I believe is the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca (90,000 m²), Morocco (after the Masjid al-Haram and the Masijid-un-Nabvi). Some corrections to my previous post: The Faisal Mosques, when completed in 1986, was the largest mosque in the world. It was larger than the Masjid al-Haram and the Masijid-un-Nabvi as well. It was then over took, in area, by the Hassan II Mosque in 1993. Right now capacity wise the Faisal mosque is the second largest (after the Imam Reza shrine) and area wise it's the third largest after the the Hassan II Mosque and the Imam Reza shrine (excluding the Masjid al-Haram and the Masijid-un-Nabvi).

The Faisal Mosque is shaped like a desert Bedouin's tent designed by the Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay and is named after the late King Faisal bin Abdul-Aziz of Saudi Arabia. This mosque is placed at a very scenic location, quite literally right at the feet of the Margala hills (the foothills of the Himalayas).

Some pictures of the prayer-hall:

The picture below might also give you an idea of it's size:

Actually people doesn't understand that the Faisal Mosque itself is not very big. I have been there and I asked somebody that how many people the mosque can accommodate inside the main building and the answer was in thousands of people only --- You know there is a large park outside the Mosque which is also treated as part of the Mosque so if you combine the capacity of the park and the main building, it will become 200,000 - 300,000 people or whatever figure you can find from google.

There is also a very big Islamic University located around Faisal Mosque and it is also part of the same Mosque if I am not wrong

when i looked inside it looks big from pics but from outside because of shape it dont look as big , but still unique.

Actually it's not a park but the courtyard of the mosque itself. The main building which you spoke of is the prayer-hall which obviously cannot be expected to house all the people (no hall can) e.g. the Badshahi mosque probably can't even house a thousand people in it's prayer-hall. The courtyard is a part of the Mosque and is not outside the confines of the mosque. The mosque has two courtyard areas one which has a marble floor and the other which has grass. Most of the mosques where I live also have these two sorts of courtyards. And as mosques go it is always the courtyards which accommodate the majority of the people, be it the Badshahi mosque, the Masjid al-Haram, the Masijid-un-Nabvi, the Hassan II Mosque or the Imam Reza shrine. The Imam Reza shrine in fact consists of many small courtyards and little complexes.

The impetus for the mosque began in 1966 when King Faisal bin Abdul-Aziz supported the initiative of the Pakistani Government to build a national mosque in Islamabad during an official visit to Pakistan. In 1969, an international competition was held in which architects from 17 countries submitted 43 proposals. The winning design was that of Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay. Forty-six acres of land were assigned for the project and the execution was assigned to Pakistani engineer and workers.[8] Construction of the mosque began in 1976 by National Construction Limited of Pakistan, led by Azim Khan and was funded by the government of Saudi Arabia, at a cost of over 130 million Saudi riyals (approximately 120 million USD today). King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz was instrumental in the funding, and both the mosque and the road leading to it were named after him after his assassination in 1975. King Faisal bin Abdul-Aziz's successor Shah Khalid laid the foundation stone for the mosque in October 1976 and signed the construction agreement in 1978. Basic information of the mosque can be found written on the foundation stone. On 18 June 1988, the first prayer was held, although the mosque was completed in 1986. The mosque grounds along with being a building for prayer, also used to house the International Islamic University some years ago but has since relocated to a new campus in 2000. Some traditional and conservative Muslims criticised the design at first for its unconventional design and lack of a traditional dome structure

Its MASSIVE. Though its impossible to pray in the courtyards because of the incessant heat, now a days. But You Dont really need that area. Have only seen it full once.
