Facebook has declined Pakistan’s request to pair mobile numbers with user’s account, a move that the government argue could help overcome the issue of fake accounts on the social network.

Responding to an email by VOA regarding the social media giant’s reaction to the request made by the Pakistan government, Facebook spokesperson Christine Chen said the company had declined the request in order to protect the rights of its users.

Pakistan asks Facebook to link accounts with mobile numbers

Earlier, Pakistan had asked Facebook to link the opening of accounts on the social network with mobile numbers in attempt to overcome the issue of fake accounts. The request came after efforts from the social network to counter and remove sacrilegious content from its platform.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) argued that mobile numbers in the country were verified through biometric verification system while Facebook accounts could be opened simply through an email. The issue of fake accounts could then be overcome if all existing accounts are verified with phone numbers.

Facebook assures purge of anti-Islamic content

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali had also met Facebook Vice President Joel Kaplan to discuss steps and actions to take in order to remove the content that is illegal in Pakistan.

Facebook, on its part, had reiterated its commitment to keep the platform safe and promote values that are in congruence with its community standards and showed its commitment to remove fake accounts, explicit, hateful and provocative material that incites violence and terrorism.

I think Pakistanis should come up with their own version of this website.

How hard can that be?

Like call it a Pakistan book and use that. Stop being lazy man.

Halfway through it Facebook will shizz its pants and give in.

Facebook is a dying phenomenon. Its just that wave hasn't hit the sub continent just yet.

only 20 million people in Pakistan have access to internet, out of which lets assume, 5 million don't have Facebook account. 15 million is not a big number to influence Facebook. Even if all of them unregistered, it won't bother Facebook at all.

Its been 7 months i didnt use fuuckbook and never looked back n never missed it

On the other hand pdf is addiction . i have speed-dialed pdf and sometimes un-intentionally open pdf

This is great news fb said no to govt culling of online liberties

Pakistan can contribute towards ideas but can't expect the network to make changes based on their needs when it'll have an impact globally. If Pakistan really wants to make changes, then how about first teach your community to avoid:

A) Making fake accounts

B) What can happen if they abuse social media ethics

C) Strengthen their own cybercrime network

Good decision.

It is linked to privacy and privacy should be the on top.

The most FB can do is to link official accounts of Pakistan with cell numbers of the particular officials :)

Rest public love to make accounts in imaginary names.

The lamest I found are Papa ki doll, Papa's princes, , cute this and that

FB isn't going to authenticate accounts. For a variety of reasons privacy to business.

Privacy in form of possible hack releasing information to big brother government. Sure there's greater chances of less security in farmville and clash of clans servers due to the terms and conditions for playing such games.

Social media thrives on it's ability to market the more the users the more the possible market for a product. Social media businesses have been accused of fudging user numbers to inflate pricing from ads to IPOs.

Just FB's entire revenue stream is advertising. Close to $8Billion in Q1 2017, and on track to hit 2 billion users by Q2.

What liberties man?
Liberty to create fake accounts?

Lol
To criticize the govt we keep forgetting the dangerous cyber crime laws the govt passed this and the laws make a really fertile field for political witch hunt of rivals

If you cannot trust the system to eventually work you can't expect change.

The paranoia will eat you alive.

There is no government machinery out to get Facebook users.

@Margarita I will allow you to post a link for your claims. If you don't then you will receive a negative rating.
