Facebook apologises, says removal of Hamza Ali Abbasi status was mistake

Anti-semitism in itself is not illegal in the US. So yelling "anti-Semitism" at something has no legal effect here (unless in conjunction with another crime and you could have a Civil Rights charge)...can't speak for other countries. So the first pic is also covered under "Freedom of Speech". You may as well have a picture poking fun of a fat girl with the caption "That's insensitive!". Yes it is...but it isn't illegal. Again there are not many laws punishing you for being an insensitive jerk.

Abbasi urged the West to revisit and fix its definition of ‘freedom of speech,’ adding that failure to do so would result in someone from the vast comity of Muslims may go “ballistic and kill unjustly.”

So in your opinion what does it mean, "some of the Muslims may go Ballistic and kill unjustly" ??

So now Going Ballistic and Killing unjustly is not barbaric?? To me going Ballistic and killing unjustly includes things like blowing bombs, killing innocents, kidnappings, hostage taking, and 9/11, 26/11, Peshawar attack, and all such barbaric acts. So how does going Ballistic and Killing unjustly not barbaric??

can you also add
- Gujarat killings
- Sikh killings
- Babri Masjid murders
- Smajhota express burning of passengers

  • People please!!! Enough of this stupid conversation!!!
Freedom of speech is not the same as freedom of consequence. If I want to I can make a rude remark about @levina or I can insult @Armstrong or poke fun at the family of @Nihonjin1051 , i can say these and no one can stop me from doing so. However, after my comments are made, I am not free from consequence. If in broke a law, such as a harassment statute or I made a threat, I can be held liable. I was able to make my comment freely, but I can't do so without reprocussion!!! Mr. Abbasi also exercised his right to speak freely, no one stopped him from making his comment, but considering he violated Facebook's policies he was subject to their consequences.

Please!!!! Stop confusing freedom of speech with freedom of consequence!!!! No one will stop you from talking, but you will be held liable for your actions. When I was in kindergarten we were taught to be mindful of hurting others, why don't adults seem to understand this easy concept?

You can speak your mind, but that doesn't absolve you of responsibility for you actions!

*Freedom of expression follows the exact same principles.
If I had even said half of this I would be labeled a terrorist apologist and aimed at justifying their death! But just coz a white man says it many nod?

The very fact that FB doesnt remove anything ANTI Islamic (I myself have received invites to protest) is showing hypocrisy at its best! If they want to remove Abbasi's comments same should be said about other people's or is this rule only exercised against Muslims or against revealing a said habit of hypocrisy?

The last line came off as a threat but I do not think he meant it as such. I believe his point was when you have such a large group of people being offended at the same time you cannot prevent a few, in the case of France 2 or 3 of them from doing something crazy.
If only people could read with a neutral mind but hey a Muslim wrote it...it is worth hating!

All those who find FaceBook not being fair for freedom of expression should vote with their mouse clicks and LEAVE. A loss of hundreds of millions of Muslim members due to the offence being caused will be a potent stimulus for FaceBook to change its policies.

You should join politics

Please note the power of civilized engagement to push forward one's points of view. And without burning any buses! :D

that's essentially a threat. Change your freedom of expression or the 2 billion will come for you. That's pretty innocent.

Not a threat but reality .. Among 2 billion people there will be 2 nuts who would use violence that doesn't mean that all 2 billion people believe in violence :

Calls for BBC's Tim Willcox to resign over Paris interview | Daily Mail Online

Freedom of Speech B!tches...oh sorry...this only applies if it's applied against Muslims.

He is facing calls to resign by those who did not like the way he worded the question, that is all. It will probably not come to pass, given that all sides have a right to air their views.

There is no need to get nasty, Sir. :D

I think the situation is more relevant to European laws than American!

I think Freedom of Speech in Europe was something implemented after WW2 and is not as liberal as you are expecting.

Maybe that cartoon should have "Europe" on the stamp instead of "West"

:)

I am no one to decide that! :enjoy: Like many in America dont know much about the outside world...many in Europe are ignorant about the same about America and its laws ...

The last line is clear threat. He does not have right to decide what 2bn muslims can do or not !
he is not deciding anything read it again with full concentration.

Freedom of speech has limits. You are not protected when exercising your capacity to threaten another person, group or nation. Under US laws the act of making a threat can constitute assault (the implied intention to commit physical or mental harm, battery occurs when you actually harm someone).

That said, I didn't really see anything wrong with his message, though the last line is problematic. Also, please read Facebook's bylaws. They state that making threats is against their rules and will not be protected. Anyone claiming this is a violation of free speech needs to understand that there is no such concept and a business has the right to censor you if you violate their rules.

Free speech has its limits!!! The presence of moderators here on PDF, whose servers are hosted in the US, should be a clear indication that your ability to say what you want has its limits should the organiztion hosting those thoughts take exception to them.

Now yr denying yr own speech here.......This last paragraph is as threatening as that. Anyways this is a Pakistan Military Forum and who ever is posting here is posting under the laws of Defence.pk and Pakistan State Laws. America resident or not it doesnt matter in this case since they are primarily the Citizens of Pakistan and represent Pakistan! not yr US of A.

BTW some great news for u.

Israeli journalists are getting death threats for publishing this cartoon
BBC reporter faces calls to resign after comment at Paris rally
