Sorry I cant help it! I have to do it!

The biggest advantage of this helmet over all existing and current planned HMS systems will be the ability to see "through" the cockpit 360 degrees.
The pilot will be able to see targets on his helmet underneath his seat.. will be able to see a SAR image of a bridge underneath his flight path.
and will be able to track multiple bogies even if they show up as underneath his thigh.

That was the objective of the original "revolutionary" HMDS helmet- 360 degree vision able to literally see "through" the floor of the cockpit. Don't know if BAE's modified Typhoon's helmet will be able to do the same.

New Typhoon Helmet - look lock and fire - BAE Systems

It looks like something out of Star Wars; it performs like something out of Star Wars – and for the fast-jet fighter pilots of the future – it could just make the difference between life and death.

Welcome to the Eurofighter Typhoon’s latest weapon – not something slung under the wing – but a system with ‘brains’ that sits on the pilot’s head.

The ‘Helmet Mounted Symbology System’ designed by BAE Systems, is a highly sophisticated helmet and support system that lets the pilot ‘see’ through the body of the aircraft, giving him a vital advantage when it comes to split-second decision-making.

Using the new helmet system, the pilot can now look at multiple targets, lock-on to them, and then, by voice-command, prioritise them. It’s a lightning-fast system to let the pilot look, lock-on, and fire.

The pilot can even do this when looking at targets over the shoulder – or at targets picked up by the radar which is directly underneath the floor of the aircraft.

This ‘look and shoot’ capability, married to a super-wide field of view gives the Typhoon pilot a 24hour all-weather field of vision.

The helmet works by having a number of fixed sensors around the cockpit area. As the pilot moves his head, the sensors on his helmet move in relation to the sensors on the aircraft ensuring the aircraft knows exactly where and what he is looking at.

Imagery projected onto the pilot’s visor gives, amongst other information, speed, heading and height – and crucially, it also gives the precise position of any enemy aircraft or missiles. The imagery, which remains stable and accurate at all viewing angles, means the pilot can make rapid decisions without ever having to take his eyes off the target.

Mark Bowman, Chief Test Pilot for BAE Systems, said: “This is a major advance in terms of combat capability and is something that gives Typhoon pilots a significant advantage when it comes to air combat. There is no doubt in my mind that the Eurofighter Typhoon leads the world in terms of this kind of capability – and this is something that all who have worked on the system can feel extremely proud of. It is a major advance in aviation capability.”

“What’s more,” he said “is that the best is still yet to come.”

And IAF service by 2014 :)

Yes it does the same thing.

its not the helmet providing a 360 degree vision! it is EO Distributed Aperture System! a helmet is just displaying the data it recives from EO Distributed Aperture System! and Only F 35 has EO DAS!

You are correct as in the F-35 will allow you to look down and "see" the floor under you. But the Typhoon has a similar feature with its EURODASS as well as the helmet which allows the pilot to lock on on enemy aircraft just by looking at wither it be over the shoulder. under the pilot or above him. Which is somewhat similar to the F-35 but not as advanced since it won't be "See through".

I didn't see anything so special about JSF. Even F-16s can do overall jobs. Both look much same as well as other jets. Helmets you can upgrade it.

I'd have to say, the JSF helmet looks really really cool :D

Actually now they are the same helmet. Since the other "Demon helmet" is getting both too expensive and not as effective as they originally said it would. Mainly something to do with the images not having a clear resolution enough they say the new acquisition is only temporary until they fix the original helmet problems since it won't be here in it's deadline yet. So for now the US is buying the British Helmet which makes it RIGHT NOW the best helmet in service with plenty of room of improvement still.

The EuroDASS i.e Defense Aids Sub Systems refers to almost everything typhoon has from radar warning receiver and ECM to chaff flares and decoys but EO DAS is an electro optical system! sure Typhoon may have one of the most advanced helmet mounted cueing system (Look & Shoot) as you know it is not something new and its out there for a long time but EO DAS is the ultimate point.

Any idea what'd be the cost of this thing? By the looks of it, it'd cost a fortune.
Yep! $100,000 a piece! Which of course is peanuts compared to the actual cost of the bird! Here's more..

Cheers!

so they did not go with the Israeli helmet after all. They went with the BAE helmet which will make the Typhoon helmet instead of the Elbiet-Rockwell and Collins helmet.

No, Elbit lost exclusivity, Lockheed Martin gave BAE chance to compete with Israel, if Elbit will fix all the problems F35 pilots will fly with Elbit's helmet
