'Extremely ill' Khaleda Zia admitted to Dhaka hospital

Zia has been transferred to a hospital from prison where she is serving a sentence for corruption.

6 Oct 2018

Jailed Bangladesh opposition leader and former prime minister Khaleda Zia has been admitted into a Dhaka hospital following a court order in response to her deteriorating health.

Zia, 73, was taken from the abandoned 19th-century prison where she is serving her sentence on corruption charges to a top medical university clinic in the heart of the capital on Saturday, according to an AFP news agency photographer at the scene.

"She has been admitted to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University hospital," director of the clinic Brigadier General Abdullah al-Harun told AFP.

Her transfer to the hospital came just days after the country's high court ordered immediate treatment for Zia after her lawyers argued the government was putting her health at risk by refusing her specialised care.

Facing further charges of graft at a hearing early last month, she said she was "extremely ill" and that her arm and leg were becoming paralysed.

Her lawyer Zainal Abedin told AFP this week that Zia would be able to choose her own doctors from outside the state-run hospital.

Zia was sentenced to five years for corruption in February, triggering clashes between police and thousands of supports of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, which she heads.

Lord Alex Carlile QC, a member ofZia's legal team, told Al Jazeera her sentence is a "political ploy" meant to keep her out of elections that scheduled to take place in December.

Zia is appealing the verdict which bars her from standing in the election. She remains imprisoned while she fights dozens of other violence and graft charges.

Zia was once an ally of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of the Bangladesh Awami League party who turned into a fierce political rival.

She is the only inmate in Dhaka Central Jail that was built under British colonial rule and declared abandoned in 2016.

Last month, authorities turned a room of the jail into a court - a move her lawyers said was illegal.

Her party boycotted the 2014 election in which Hasina returned to power but is expected to contest the election due in December.

Begum Zia is a very classy and charismatic leader. She never lost a election in her political career.

Not sure if she will be out of jail or not but she will be remember as champ of democratic movement in Bd.

She made some calculated mistakes as PM. So now she is suffering. It’s very sad to see symbol Bd nationalist being tortured to death.

I see her as an asset of the BAL regime. She has the tendency of believing the sweet words of her foes. She has the dismal record of failing to act when opportunities show up. So I don't think it will be a loss for the opposition if she dies in prison. Matter of fact if she dies in prison the BAL regime will be held responsible and people will be rallying for revenge.

Begum Zia is a very classy and charismatic leader. She never lost a election in her political career.

Late president Ziaur Rahman is responsible for her achievements. She never achieved anything on her own. She has neither the prudence nor determination Zia had. She is like a playing doll in hasina's hands.

She is too gullible for Bd’s dirty politics.

Her biggest achievement is that she gave rebirth to BNP after Zia.

Her biggest failure is that she didn’t destroy the Awami Dallas within BNP and outside of BNP when she had the chance. Hence, she is paying the price.

During a war when the leader is gullible who do you think pays the price? If you are truly a BNP supporter raise your voice to have Mahmudur Rahman at the helm. He has all the qualities to lead successfully like Zia. Tarek, Moudud, Fakhrul, these are all mediocre politicians. They cannot face the evil alliance between the hasina regime and global players. Characters like Harris, Falu and that former mayor of Dhaka city Sadek Hossain Khoka are no politicians at all. They are a bunch of greedy and dishonest contractors posing as politicians.

After Zia, BNP should've selected someone like Saifur Rahman or Jamiruddin Sircar instead of Khaleda. Even Col Oli or B. Chowdhury would've been better.

There are many 'well wishers' for BNP who have no problem with hasina, their problems start when they see people like Mahmudur Rahman.

No way Mahmudur Rahman is getting ahead of Tareq, Rizvi, Fakhrul. Even if BNP comes to power they will prefer the likes of Falu over him. Mahmudur Rahman is actually a shrewd person. And BNp would do much better under his leadership. But BNP feel they need Zia family name.

And BNP is paying a very high price for such stupidity.

He is a good man and patriot. He will be tag as ghaddar if he try to replace Khaleda or Tarique by BNP supporters.
