Lately the trend has been like this for urban life in Dhaka city, BD where I live:the wife commits adultery or runs away with a bf and the husband has to pay her something like a million of taka for the mahr.also she gets to keep the kids and the house even sometimes.she gets no punishment whatsoever and someone has to pay for someone else's wrong.sometimes the wife kills the hubby or the children with the help of her lover and don't get that much of punishment either.the Islamic laws(actually family laws for Muslims) have been setup in such away that it benefits the women and still women complain about discrimination everywhere.

note this is for urban life.In rural Bangladesh things are even worse for some cases.
I really really really wish there were some religious ideals ingrained in the population.People here are now too liberal.way too much.and secularism has been the harbinger of liberalism.

has this also been growing in Pakistan and India also?

In most countries if the divorce is as the result of the woman's adultery, she might lose out to getting half of what the man owns and even alimony.

Of course, that should be provable.

Brother Asim,
In reality this is quite difficult to prove. I know somebody who is quite a rich Doctor, whose wife ran off with the Builder and has successfully sued him for half his income, the house and even a share in his private income and the money that he will get on retirement!!!! we should all be thankful for our faithful wives(at least those who have one)

there should at least be a fine or the one who initiates the divorce for another partner should be prevented from getting money or pay money to his/her current spouse for divorce settlement.

Adultery? That term is not used by civilized people anymore. It's called cheating on your spouse.

whatever it is referred to as ,it still doesn't change the magnitude of the bad deed.

The divorce laws have always been in women's favour because men are the ones who are usually unfaithful. but the problem is that some wives take advantage of this.

the court should seriously look into the case and decide who is the real wong-doer before passing judgement, instead of just following rules blindly.

I dunno about Asian countries, but here in South Africa and Botswana if a woman commits adultery, she gets nothing.

If u ask me, i think adultery should be punishable by law. After all, its a crime thats much worse than pick-pocketing or even armed robbery.

Oh really? How so?

It's not the government's business to try to keep marriages together by trying to make draconian laws meant to scare people.

adultery is more than just personal business. it ruins people's lives. you have to also look at the impact of adultery on human life before deciding whether its a crime or not. Just imagine for a second the trauma your family will suffer should your father or mother commit adultery.

remember, whichever religion you belong to, marriage is a promise an oath taken before God, and serves as a cornerstone to the founding of society. By cheating on his/her partner, one is undermining the values and morals of that society.

If even a small crime like pick-pocketing is punishable by law, i dont see why adultery shouldnt be.

This has a lot to do with the financial independence of women. When more and more women start earning an income; whatever the reason; two things are bound to happen.

Firstly, the wife wont be afraid that if her husband divorces her, she will have no one to care for her. Thus she is less likely to put up with the physical or verbal abuse from the husband or the in-laws.

Secondly, more men or women come in contact with other each other, more likely it is that they would find someone whom they like better than their spouse.

Both the above lead to adultry and or divorce. This is something which is inevitable as the time goes on. Only alternative is to shut the women up at home as the Taliban culture suggests. However such a situation allows the husband to either divorce or marry more than one wife without any rights to the poor female.

if someone wants a divorce he/she should get one but should pay the money and lose custody of the children if he/she committed adultery.western laws are simply unfair.

but it is the government's job to protect innocent people and punish the guilty.
divorce and adultery are two different things even though one's occurrence leads to the other.
