KARACHI: The export target for the current financial year has been revised upward to $22 billion from $20 billion.
Mukhdoom Amin Fahim, Federal Minister Commerce stated this after resuming the office of Ministry of Commerce on Saturday.
Chairing the meeting in the Ministry of Commerce, Islamabad to review the performance of the attached departments of Ministry of Commerce, including Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), Federal Minister talked about 3 years performance of TDAP and highlighted the major achievements.
Most significantly, the export target for the current financial year 2010-11 has been revised and set to $22.0 billion from $20.0 billion, he disclosed and said that the step has been taken keeping in view the record-breaking exports during the last three months, culminating in an achievement of $2.329 billion in the month of January 2011, which is 38.2% higher than the level of $1.685 billion during January 2010.
If the current momentum in increase of export continues, the minister expressed confidence that the exports might cross the target of $22.0 billion in FY 2010-11. The year-on-year growth would be 14% over the achievement of $19.313 of FY 2009-10.
The minister said that exports during the 7 months of FY 2010-11 (July-January) were $13.279 billion as against $10.784 billion, registering a growth of 23.1% over the same period last year.
The minister stated that the government of Pakistan has declared 2011 as Year of Exports and 60 Years Friendship between China and Pakistan. In order to achieve this objective, TDAP has planned to enhance its export promotion activities around the globe with special focus on China and Japan adding to the already regional focus of the TDAPs activities.
In China, TDAP is set to participate in 20 international trade fairs, which would be a 100% increase in the number of exhibitions participated in the last year. These exhibitions will be complimented with B2B and business forum meetings. In addition, 10 product-specific delegations will visit China and similarly 10 buying missions will be invited from China. For Japan, TDAP will participate in a number of international events relating to home textile, apparel/garments and food products including mangoes. The Japanese government has recently lifted the ban on the import of Pakistani mangoes and TDAP is engaging consultants for setting up of Vapour Heat Treatment (VHT) plants at Karachi and Multan to take full advantage of market access opportunities made available due to lifting of ban.
