BEIJING-Pakistan has confirmed a 400 percent increase in the export of copper products to China in the recent year.

According to a report published by China Economic Net, this huge rise in the export of copper and other copper-related products from the country has helped to boost local industry.

Three year back exports of copper from Pakistan were only 106 million dollars. However, in the year 2019, copper exports to China have risen to 550 million dollars.

The current rise in exports is seen though the largest copper reserves of Pakistan “Reko Diq project” which is under dispute at the international court of justice.

If the dispute settles down shortly then one of the biggest players in the copper industry of China, Metallurgical Corporation of China (MCC) that is mining in Saindak mines expects to take the export to $10 billion per year.

It is to be noted that mining and processing of copper requires a high-end technology and the expertise of Chinese copper processing companies like MCC have played a very vital role to develop the Saindak copper mines from the year 1995 onwards. Talking to CEN, Director of Administration Office Song Guozhao said that Saindak Copper-Gold Project is designed to produce and process 12,800 tons of copper ores per day (4.25 million tons per year); currently, the output of copper blister is about 13,000 tons annually.

“By the end of February 2020, the project has a total of 1,977 employees, 256 Chinese and 1,721 Pakistani, of which the number of local employees accounts for 87% of the total,” he mentioned.

He stated that as the Pakistani managerial and technical personnel continuously improve their capacity, the company will further, carry forward the process of localized administration. Saindak Copper-Gold Project composes of three ore bodies that are the South, the North and the East Ore Bodies (SOB, NOB & EOB). The MCC has been working in SOB and NOB, and the mineable resources in the two ore bodies are going to run out soon.

The Chinese and Pakistani sides are in close communication on its feasibility. Since the other two ore bodies are going to run out of resources soon, It is imperative to find supplementary resources so that the development of the project would be sustained, the employment of local people will be secured, and more continuous contributions will be made to local economy, Song said.

Saindak is an open-pit mining project rather than underground mining, so there is no sinking problem in the mining area. We have been operating the project for so many years and we have a good knowledge and understanding of the country, especially the mining industry, cultural environment, religious practices in Balochistan.

We also enjoy sound cooperation with federal and local governments and other partners in Pakistan. Given this, we are willing to expand our investment in the mining sector in Pakistan. We are interested in the development of the H4 and Reko-Diq, and we hope that the Pakistani government will conduct international tenders for these projects as soon as possible, Song added.

Talking with CEN, Commercial Counselor of Pakistan Embassy in China Badar u Zaman said that the Pakistani government is eager to increase the exports of copper to China. The commercial section of the embassy is putting huge efforts which have resulted in a 400 percent increase in copper exports in the last two years.

He further said that besides MCC, other Chinese companies would also be facilitated in Pakistan. In addition to Reko Diq and Saindak, Chitral region of Northern Pakistan is also very rich in copper reserves but unfortunately, a huge number of mines in that area are not producing due to lack of modern technology. If Chinese companies get Reko Dig project, Pakistan has the potential to export $10 billion of copper annually, which would be a breakthrough in the country’s economy, Badar added.

.
Get Reko Diq up and running and it will increase further and add gold to the export mix.

Pakistani will only benefit from the tax proceeds of this mine. The entire mine has been presented in a silver platter to chinese companies. We dont have any share in our own resources. The chinese digger and the chinese sell. All profits are in their own pockets. The resource is only being exploited with very very little benefit to pakistani population and treasury.

I wish China is kicked off this project. Let the mine sit around producing zero copper.untilnwe ourselves are capable enough of mining it.

Sitting around for 70 years didn't make us capable.

Anyways, it has created thousands of jobs, money for everyone and whole new economic ecosystem related to this mine.

The chinese are better then the British. When the Chinese get involved....things get done. Mines get built and minerals get extracted. Profits shared according to international norms. Many Anglo-bloc nations buy exploration rights but develop nothing. That's how we got into the mess at Reko Diq.

.
Now we should look for processing facilities within country. This will result into more local jobs and importantly establishing right quantity of copper being exported.

.
Not sustainable local manufacturing industry. It is simple mining and transportation. The real work gets done by china. If you really want to benefit from this mine, ser up a processing industry near the mine and export copper products to the world from Gawadar. But that wont ever be done because that will undermine chinese market. They will extract raw material cheaply exploit labor (I have worked with chinese and I know how they squeeze the life and blood out of their employyes) and export it back to China. The local population earns a thousandth on the dollar, the treasury earns a cent on the dollar.

The buyer and seller is the same company. Talk about under table dealing.

I don't know what's the current status of Reko-Diq mining project (which is more related to the extraction of gold and less of copper) but Saindak project was all about extraction of copper. It's been long when we started working on that project. I hope they are now mining copper out at a large scale from there. I also wish we could establish industry for some high-end export-oriented products rather than exporting just raw metal. Government should develop the local capability to do the mining, extraction, and processing work.

Pakistan does not have the capital, experience or technology for modern mining and mineral extraction. We have to work with a capable foreign entity to help us develop this. Once we have the experience then we can think about developing mining on our own. Ultimately developing the final product industry for copper......pipe and wire is more important.

The value of Reko Diq just went up by a lot.....possible by $100's billions as gold prices sky rocket. With all this global money printing.....gold is definitively not going to lose its luster any time soon. We should ignore any world bank ligation and develop this site. I don't think world bank can sanction us for ignoring them since Reko Diq was not a world bank funded project. Third parties will probably not get involved, because of this world bank ligation. This is one site Pakistan may be forced develop on its own.

We need to really find more avenues for exports now. Remittances and garment exports are expected to take a huge hit due to Coronavirus virus. For example I know in Middle East taxis are banned, now this would mean thousands of Pakistani drivers wont be able to make money and send much back home for next few months. Similarly here in USA most apparel and clothing sectors are down because the families are shopping only for essentials and malls/dept stores are also closed - this means our garment orders are going to be cancelled in large numbers. These negatives may get offset by less oil import bill but not sure if this will be enough.

Does Everybody Realize This Story Has A Massive Downside To It As Well

The Chinese mine and the chinese export. The seller and the buyer are the same. We get cheap cents on the dollar. Set up a copper processing unit and then export semi processed copper. That is going g to earn a lot more money. And God I wish it isnt a bloody Chinese company that sets up a unit.

We couldnt hold steelmill, we couldnt upgrade our agriculture sector and we couldnt build dams till now and here ppl thinking we will.have mining and all that technology. I am sorry its not within us to develop something by our own or even keep it upto datw until army involves and then we aim army.
