ISLAMABAD: Nawaz Sharif, the Prime Minister-in-waiting, has decided to have a smart cabinet with experience and commitment blended into an effective mix of about 25 ministers and ministers of state.

The PML-N will have the major share in the cabinet with Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Khawaja Asif, Khurram Dastagir, Ishaq Dar, Ahsan Iqbal, Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Qadir Baloch, Sardar Yousaf, Murtaza Javed Abbasi, Aziz Baloch, Pervez Rashid, Saira Afzal Tarar, Balighur Rehman, Riaz Peerzada, Senator Kamran Michael and Murtaza Jatoi being the frontrunners for the cabinet slots.

Some of the independents will also be adjusted in the federal cabinet but on the basis of their capacity, commitment and capability. Jam Kamal, an independent from Balochistan, is considered quite talented.

Sources said that the coalition partners would also be given a share in the cabinet. The Pakistan Muslim League Functional has already offered its support to the PML-N government, but Pir Pagara did not put up any demand for cabinet slots for his party members. However, the N-League would give the Functional league representation in the top political decision making body of the government.

The PML-N has yet to decide what it will offer to Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s JUI-F. Sardar Mehtab Abbasi is said to be negotiating with Maulana. As yet, there is said to be no commitment of the PML-N with Arbab Ghulam Rahim and Shirazis of interior Sindh.

The sources said that the cabinet would be smart in size as its number, including the federal ministers and ministers of state, would be around 25. Because of Nawaz Sharif’s public commitment to cut the non-development/current expenditure by 30 percent, the N-League is already planning to abolish/merge a number of federal ministries to cut their size from the existing over 40 to proposed 25.

About the portfolios, there is no sure word about most of the top runners for the cabinet. The safe bet is Ishaq Dar as finance minister while it is not sure what Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan would opt for. In the past, he had been enjoying the pertroleum ministry but now the PML-N is considering to merge the petroleum ministry with the Ministry of Water and Power to create the energy ministry that is likely to be offered to Khawaja Asif.

Because of his standing in the party and repute, Chaudhry Nisar is likely to be given his choice portfolio. Abdul Qadir Baloch may be the next interior minister. The information ministry is expected to be offered either to Pervez Rashid or to Khwaja Saad Rafiq. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is expected to get some technical ministry whereas Ahsan Iqbal is generally considered as the best man to work in the education sector and in the planning and development side.

Among Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Khurram Dastagir, one may land in the commerce ministry. There is absolute confusion about the next foreign minister in the Nawaz Sharif government. Who would make it to the foreign ministry is simply unclear at this stage. According to the sources, in the next three-four days, all the names of the cabinet and their likely portfolios will be decided.

40% of these have been tried already and have failed.

I have slim hope with Ishaq Dar.

Saira Afzal Tarrar ! Is there any relation with Ex President Rafique Tarrar ? If so, NS is once again playing the same old game of kitchen cabinet. Nothing has changed.

One of the person you highlighted was Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, the person who was managed PIA in last tenure.

during 96-97 PIA posted a loss of 4.6 billion, 97-98 it posted a profit of 700 million !!!

No Sir! We wish you all the best. However, we find it difficult to believe that if PM, CM Punjab, Foreign minister, finance minister (and few more ministers - not to forget Abid Sher Ali) of a country are from one family then the country will prosper !!! I hope you understand.

NS is going the same route as he did in his second stint (97 to 99). President, PM, CM Punjab, Foregin minister (Mr Kanjoo), finance minister and couple more ministers were from his family. This proved counter productive then and it will prove counter productive now.

In this way, NS is working towards his own failure.

From PTI, best of luck if PMLn can do good to the country. It does not look like that way, so far.

Just imagine a country that produced foreign ministers like Bhutto and Agha Shai; had Mr Kanjoo in past and now Maryam Nawaz in the two tenures of PMLn.

Pathetic thinking and weak, scared people (IK said: Buzdil Kabhee leader naheen ban skata). These appointments confirm IK's point.
