An exclusive specially trained paramilitary unit armed with the latest gadgets and weaponry has now been deployed for security of India’s Parliament house complex.

The team, drawn from the best trained men and women of the CRPF, a paramilitary force has been named the Parliament Duty Group (PDG). The creation of the PDG was mooted in the aftermath of the 2001 Parliament terror attack.

The Parliament House till now was guarded by troops drawn from various units of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Delhi Police.

The new squad, 1,540 personnel-strong, will comprise those who have not only successfully completed commando and tactics training, but are also adept in dealing with nuclear and bio-chemical emergencies.

“The squad is operational and has been deployed. These personnel have been trained according to specific requirements of this important task which needs them to be highly motivated and skillful to deal with an security challenge,” told CRPF Inspector General (Northern Range) A P Maheshwari.

The IG will be the administrative controller of the squad.

The Union Home Ministry had approved the creation of the special unit in April last year to guard the complex which comprises the main Parliament House, reception office building, Sansadiya Gyanpeeth (Parliament library building) and Parliament House Annexe.

The commando-trained CRPF personnel have been armed with the latest gadgets and weaponry and they will soon be given special emblems to don them on their uniforms.

The unit will function under the operational command of the Additional Secretary (Security) of Parliament House with the overall in-charge being the Director General of CRPF.

The only thing that needs to be done to protect our Parliament is to shoot some idiots sitting inside it

Actually there are only two things done by Pakistan that I like.
- attack on Parliament
- sending Hina to India ;)

'Commando' is the most overused word in Indian security parlance. It's an ill-defined word anyway, so I guess the liberal use of it should come as no surprise.

IMO, India needs to streamline its internal security apparatus. Take a holistic look at what sort of security personnel are required for what sort of jobs, and create security agencies on that basis.

We have CRPF doing everything from police work to election duties to riot control to securing vital installations to waging jungle warfare. We have the CISF doing many of those things as well. We also have ITBP, BSF, NSG doing some of those things. Some of them are also expected to augment the army in wartime.

Ideally, the CRPF should be strictly used for what it is - a POLICE force. To beef up state police forces in an emergency, and to patrol the streets during elections or other such security-sensitive occasions.

The CISF should do its mandate of providing security for sensitive installations, whether nuclear power plants or the parliament.

The NSG should perform all counter terrorist activities within India, and mount offensive action against known terrorist camps or leaders, whether maoist or islamist. And they should be used as a last line of defence in case of situations like 26/11.

A new paramilitary force should be created to wage war against anybody who wages war against the Indian state from within, like Maoists or NE insurgents do. I know that the COBRAs look menacing with all that high tech gadgetry, but what is really needed is a dedicated paramilitary force, not a police force (CRPF) training a few of its battalions in the tactics of warfare and masquerading as a paramilitary force. They end up being neither fish nor fowl. Policemen should NOT be waging war, and military personnel should NOT be looking after law and order. Those are two different professions, very different from each other, requiring very different skill sets, despite the fact that both carry arms.

Today we have too many security forces, with overlapping mandates. Leading to inefficiency in many ways - money-wise, manpower-wise, intelligence-wise, training-wise. We really have to make a policy of one force, one job. Policing by one, garding by another, warring by another and so on.

I wish these Commandos let 5-6 Ministers die in the next attack on Parliament and then i would like to see the reaction of the b@stards.
