Amer Ahmad, who served as deputy treasurer under Democrat Kevin Boyce, was taken in custody in Pakistan on Tuesday. Ahmad was wanted by authorities for breaking the terms of his bond in a corruption case.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Former Ohio Deputy Treasurer Amer Ahmad, wanted by U.S. marshals for reportedly breaking the terms of his bond in a corruption case, has been taken into custody in Pakistan, according to a Chicago TV station.
A federal judge in Ohio issued an arrest warrant for Ahmad last Friday after his wife told a court in Chicago that he ordered her to get him a fake Pakistani birth certificate so he could get a passport.
Deputy U.S. Marshal Brad Fleming said late Tuesday afternoon that he couldn't confirm the report.
Ahmad pleaded guilty last December to charges that while working for Democratic Treasurer Kevin Boyce, he steered state business to his financial adviser in exchange for more than $500,000 in kickbacks.
He was then released on his own recognizance awaiting a sentencing hearing. Under the terms of his bond, he had to surrender his passport.
In requesting an order of protection from a Cook County court, his wife, Samar Ahmad, wrote she was “very concerned” that her husband would kidnap their three young children and take them to Pakistan.
“He believes that [he] is not guilty and deserves a life with the children and repeatedly gets very angry if I say anything,” Samar Ahmad wrote.
Ahmad left the treasurer’s office after Republican Josh Mandel was elected in 2010. Until last July, Ahmad served as comptroller for the city of Chicago under Democratic Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
