Ex-cricketer Maninder caught with cocaine

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

New Delhi: Former Test cricketer-turned-commentator Maninder Singh was detained by the narcotics branch of Delhi Police on Tuesday night for allegedly possessing 1.5 grams of cocaine.
S i n g h was picked up from his residence at Gagan Vihar in Preet Vihar, east Delhi, by the cops along with a drug peddler, Sayam Siddiqui, and an unidentified Nigerian. The three are being questioned at Shakarpur police station, sources said. The police have recovered 10 grams of cocaine from Siddiqui and his suspected role in the Rahul Mahajan drug case is being investigated.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime and Railways) Ranjit Narayan and DCP (Narcotics and Crime Prevention) A S Cheema refused to comment on the detention of the former cricket star. Police sources, however, said that the narcotics branch had been trailing a Nigerian drug peddler, which led to the three detentions.
‘‘We were tracking a cocaine peddler and he led us to a house in Preet Vihar. We didn’t know it was the house of Maninder Singh. We are trying to establish whether the contraband was meant for personal consumption or for sale,’’ said a senior police officer.
Maninder (41), a former left-arm spinner, had represented India in 35 Test matches and 59 one-day internationals. Once regarded as an heir to the legendary Bishen Singh Bedi, Maninder retired from international cricket at an unusually early age of 28. According to some experts, Maninder’s was a classic case of early burnout of a player unable to cope with the popularity and demands of cricket at the highest level.
