KHANEWAL: Former Chief Justice (CJ) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said on Saturday that democracy was incomplete without the local bodies' elections and the politicians had pushed the country to the back.

Addressing the Khanewal District Bar Association, Iftikhar Chaudhry said the 1962 Constitution was dictatorial in nature which did not guarantee provincial autonomy that caused its failure.

He said the bureaucracy, through collusion, impeded provision of human rights. However, he said, despite all impediments, the missing persons were recovered. The former CJ said the government was not protecting rights of the people. He said an honest government was the need of the hour to set the country on path of development and prosperity.

Unfortunately, he said, the politicians had pushed the country back. He said the politicians made tall promises with the voters but abandoned them after coming into power. "This is the reason corruption is not coming to an end," he lamented. He said this corruption started right from the elections and reached at the echelons of power. "Whosoever comes to power indulges in the same favouritism, corruption and bribery," he said.

Iftikhar Chaudhry said the people of southern Punjab believed in independent judiciary, and they always talked about Pakistan. He said the supremacy of the Constitution must be ensured at all costs.

He is a habitual criminal and law violator, this is why Musharraf cabinet brought resolution against him, but dam on Imran Khan who had him restored in equally, illegal fashion.
