DHAKA: Pakistan’s ISI was linked to the sensational 2004 case of arms smuggling to Ulfa militants in Assam from Bangladesh, a detained former chief of the country’s top intelligence agency has told investigators here.

Ex-chief of Bangladesh’s National Security Intelligence (NSI), Retd Brigadier General Abdur Rahim and another official told interrogators and court that Dubai-based ARY business group and Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence were involved in the case, a media report said.

According to statements of Rahim and ex-NSI director retired Wing Commander Shahabuddin Ahmed, ARY group and Pakistan high commission in Dhaka financed the consignment of weapons destined to ULFA hideouts in Assam with ISI assistance, the Daily Star said quoting unnamed officials. “He (Shahabuddin) carefully used his power (as an NSI official) to meet the detective officers of the foreign embassy and exchange information. “

Rahim also said the ARY Group, that enjoys the support of the ISI, financed the consignment of 10 truck arms and ammunition while some officials of the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka were main patrons of the ULFA.

Liakat tells the same story too

Detained former National Security Intelligence (NSI) deputy director (DD) Liakat Hossain gave information to investigators that conform to many important points of the confessional statement of ex-NSI director Sahab Uddin.

The former NSI DD also hinted at involvement of a foreign embassy and Dubai-based ARY group in the smuggling of 10 truckloads of firearms and ammunition seized on April 2, 2004 on the Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Ltd jetty, said CID Chittagong Divisional Special Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohammad Muslim.

However, like Sahab and ex-NSI chief Brig Gen (retd) Abdur Rahim, Liakat denied his involvement in the transportation of the weapons consignment, said sources in Criminal Investigating Department (CID), which is investigating the sensational Chittagong arms haul case.

During the four-day remand that ended yesterday, Liakat said the embassy provided cellphone monitoring technology to the NSI as a gift, the sources added.

He also talked about the meetings the then NSI chief had with ARY group, officials of the embassy and a South Asian country's army intelligence agency and named the persons who attended the meetings, sources said.

The ex-NSI DD may be produced before the court with prayer for further remand today, the CID SSP said.

Liakat Hossain was arrested in Dhaka Tuesday following the confessional statement made by ex-NSI director Sahab Uddin. He was placed on a four-day remand Thursday.

Meanwhile, detained ex-NSI chief Maj Gen (retd) Rezzaqul Haider is yet to be taken on a six-day remand under Taskforce Interrogation (TFI) cell in Dhaka.

Rezzaqul along with the other ex-NSI chief Brig Gen (retd) Abdur Rahim was placed on six-day remand each on May 20.

Rezzaqul's lawyers prayed for the cancellation of the remand but the court denied it Thursday.

Investigation officer of the case Muniruzzaman Chowdhury, a senior ASP of CID Chittagong, told the court that Rezzaqul would be taken on remand this week.

Sources said Rezzaqul might be quizzed at the TFI cell today or tomorrow.

The two ex-NSI bosses were arrested at their Dhaka homes on May 16 following the confessional statement of Sahab.

The CID yesterday sought a 10-day remand for ex-NSI director Sahab Uddin before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

The court would hear on the remand prayer later.

Meanwhile, former adviser to a caretaker government Maj Gen (retd) MA Matin said the last caretaker government did not meddle in the investigation of the sensational Chittagong arms haul case.

You want to ask that to Awami League. If RAW can supply arms and ammunation to santi bahini and terror outfit like JMB then RAWs involvement in it is very much possible. Besides, Jalil then GS of Awami League and Hasian in more than one occations threatend to cause civil war. So was it for Awami civil war terror? Huge amount of ammunation was also discovered from Awami League local leaders in north bengal earlier that or previous year.

Police recovered 62,112 bullets of Chinese rifle and powerful explosives weighing 120kg from an abandoned truck and an Awami League (AL) leader's house at Jogarpara village in Kahalu upazila of the district on Friday night in what they said the biggest ever haul.
Five persons including the wife of AL leader Akhlakur Rahman Pintu were arrested.

Pintu, convenor of Birkadar Union AL, along with five others fled the spot before the police arrived.

Sources said police could not arrest the leaders of the gang, believed to be involved in arms trade, as they fled before the police raid.

"There was undoubtedly a massive plan for sabotage and it may be linked to other sensational crimes across the country," Deputy Commissioner of Bogra Rafiqul Mohamed told The Daily Star.

The explosives recovered are used for making dynamites and the ammunition are of Chinese origin, now also made in India, he said.

Some 50,100 bullets in 18 plastic bags and 42 packets of explosives were recovered from the truck abandoned inside a brick kiln of one Yasin Ali. The rest were found in and around the AL leader's house.

The explosives are of dark brown colour, each packet weighing around two kilograms. An army official present at the spot told newsmen on condition of anonymity that about 200 grams of the explosives were enough to blow up a whole thana like Kahalu.

At around 10:00pm on Friday, two persons informed the Dupchachia police that a truck loaded with pineapples was left unclaimed at the brick kiln of Yasin Ali at Joarpara in Kahalu upazila.

They also said some locals were looting the pineapples and that Pintu along with five others were unloading some 'large and heavy plastic bags'.

Officer-in-Charge of the Dupchachia Police Station Zabid Hasan went to the spot and recovered the ammunition and explosives.

Later, Dupchachia and Kahalu police jointly searched the village.

Acting on the statement of Pintu's wife Anwara Begum, they recovered four bags of ammunition from a bamboo cluster behind their house, one bag from the courtyard of the house, one from a nearby pond and 15 packets of explosives from a room at the house.

Police also arrested Bachhu, Enamul, Sohel and Feroz of the same village who were allegedly helping Pintu unload the bags from the truck.

Police suspect the ammunition and explosives were brought from Chittagong.

The Dupchachia officer-in-charge said Pintu was on the police list of suspects for long but there was no specific allegation against him.

Without directly blaming the AL, ruling BNP lawmaker from Bogra Helaluzzaman Talukdar said the incident made it clear who were engaged in anti-state activities. He demanded immediate arrest of the gang leaders.

District AL President Mamtaz Uddin however said he does not know of any AL leader by the name of Pintu. He denied involvement of any AL activist in such crimes.

A team of army explosive experts from Bogra and Dhaka went to the spot to inspect the ammunition and explosives.
