Interesting read that will surely put a smile on one's face

Climate change is shrinking sheep

By Victoria Gill
Science reporter, BBC News

Climate change is causing a breed of wild sheep in Scotland to shrink, according to research.

Scientists say milder winters help smaller sheep to survive, resulting in this "paradoxical decrease in size".

Classic evolutionary theory would predict that wild sheep gradually get bigger, as the stronger, larger animals survive into adulthood and reproduce.

Reporting in Science journal, the team says this shows the "subtle interplay" between evolution and the environment.

Scientists first began studying Soay sheep, on the island of Hirta in the St Kilda archipelago, in 1985.

Since then, the sheep have decreased in size by 5% - their legs getting steadily shorter and their body weight decreasing.

This strange phenomenon was first reported in 2007, but the reason for it remained under debate.

'A natural laboratory'

The lead researcher in the study, Tim Coulson from Imperial College London, said the island provided an ideal opportunity to tease apart the factors driving the sheep's physical change.
“ In the past, only big, healthy sheep... could survive the harsh winters on Hirta ”
Tim Coulson Imperial College London

"The island is almost like a natural laboratory - there are only the sheep and the vegetation there," he said.

He and his team had access to detailed information about the sheep that had been collected over more than two decades.

"We have so much great data," said Professor Coulson, "that we were able to write a ledger of how much of an effect each of the different factors had on the sheep."

They used a formula called the "Price equation", which was designed by evolutionary theorist George Price to predict how a physical trait, such as body size, will change from one generation to the next.

With all of this data, the team was able to "rearrange the equation" and use it to work out how much of a contribution each driver made to the sheep's body size.

They found that the local environment had a stronger effect on the animals than the evolutionary pressure to grow larger.

"In the past, only the big, healthy sheep and large lambs that had piled on weight in their first summer could survive the harsh winters on Hirta," said Professor Coulson.

Because of climate change, he explained, grass for food is now available for more months of the year on the island.

"Survival conditions are not so challenging - even the slower growing sheep have a chance of making it, and this means smaller individuals are becoming increasingly prevalent in the population," he said.

The team also found that younger sheep tended to give birth to smaller lambs - a phenomenon they termed "the young mum effect".

This effect, said Professor Coulson, combined with environmental changes had "overriden what we would expect through natural selection".

As for the future of the sheep, the team believes that they are still shrinking.

"The next step is to extend our description of past change into a predictive model," said Professor Coulson.

"But it's too early to say if, in 100 years, we will have chihuahuas herding pocket-sized sheep."

One though wonders what the local dairies/farmers will have to say — are our animals getting bigger or smaller, what sort of evolution is at play here... in fact who went to the bakra mandi on Eid this year? :cheesy:

Evolution is a process of natural selection and natural selection is based on 'uniformitarianism' which is more like a philosophy of science that says how the environment from Weather, Land Erosion, Water and generally all the minor things around the environment shape and reform the way species move forward.

As far as Global warming goes there is no doubt that the earth is getting warmer from all the carbon emissions left in the atmosphere but i still think alot of the people are using it more as a political movement than what the harsh reality. Remember the world goes through different phases of Glacial changes, from what I've studied in my geomorphology class was that over the past 900,000 years (according to carbon dating) there are two stages, Glacial stage when most of the earth is covered in Ice followed by an Inter-glacial stage (one we are living in right now) which are much warmer. The Glacial stages last apporximatly 100,000 to 110,000 years followed by an Inter-glacial stage which lasts for 25,000 years.

The last Glacial age was approximately 15000 years ago and the last Inter-glacial period was approximately 125,000 years ago and THAT was 3 degrees Celsius higher than the ones we are living in now. The Inter-glacial period we are in right now is called the Holoscene Epoch.

So i find the whole Global warming thing a little bit over the top, again i am not saying its not there, its very much true how the carbon emissions do pose a threat to the climate by blocking the atmosphere and keeping the heat from the sunglight within the earths surface but people like Al Gore use it as a fear tactic for some odd reason. Nonethless its still good that people are going green, hybrid cars, green windows, light bulbs etc so i guess fear like that isn't to bad as long as your helping the planet afterall its the only thing we have and its beautiful :)

Cheers

Agree with you 100%, but you must add that the Sun also goes thru cycles, currently the Sun is also getting hotter and that is resulting in tempreture rise also.

Study says sun getting hotter

WASHINGTON (AP) - The sun is getting hotter, adding heat to an Earth already thought to be warming from greenhouse gases.

Solar radiation reaching the Earth is 0.036 percent warmer than it was in 1986, when the current solar cycle was beginning, a researcher reports in a study to be published Friday in the journal Science. The finding is based on an analysis of satellites that measure the temperature of sunlight.

The increase is only a small fraction of the total heat from the sun, but in a century it would be enough to seriously aggravate problems of global warming thought to be caused by greenhouse gases, says Richard C. Willson of Columbia University's Center for Climate Systems Research.

Willson said that most researchers expect greenhouse gases to warm the planet by 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit in the next 100 years. Solar irradiance could add another 0.72 degrees F and ''that is not an insignificant number. It is smaller than the greenhouse effect, but it is not trivial,'' he said.

''This is a significant increase,'' said John Firor of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. ''It would increase the rate at which we go into warming.''

Firor said that based on the current estimate of how greenhouse gases will warm the planet over the next century, the solar heat increase found by Willson would boost that warming trend by about 20 percent.

Although studies show that the Earth has warmed about one degree in the last century and the trend continues, there is a division among scientists about what is causing it. Some believe it is a natural cycle for the planet, unrelated to humans. Others blame the warming on an increase in the atmosphere of greenhouse gases, mostly carbon dioxide from the burning of oil, gas, coal and wood.

At an international meeting in Japan in three months, the United States and other nations will debate the need to reduce the burning of fuels in order to slow global warming.

It is not caused by global warming. The smaller rams are more handsome than the larger ones, like Brad Pitt or Tom Cruse. So they get more attention and opportunity with the ewes. The net result is smaller sheep, but they are prettier.

i know global warning... :) i saw discovery chanel that polar bears r dying for global warning... my geography teahcer told me that all animals of cold country will die someday.... is this the rain late this year?
