Not really. Supporting amd arming militias groups in the region doesn't amount to much. Many countries today can do that, its just that vast majority of sane countries or governments don't have a policy of supporting non state actors as a policy unlike Iran.
However, to say the sanctions didn't work is very wrong. It did work and it does work. Else the Iranian government wouldn't have been looking for a deal with the P5+1 powers and agreed to sign amd followed the deal until trump came in power and revoked it again(to Irans dismay and complains. Lol)
The thing is the sanctions have actually led to a stagnant Iran compared to what the country could have achieved given its vast potential.
You do realise that Iran is not resource poor country like Pakistan or Yemen or Bengladesh or even India etc. Plus Iran is an old cilivilisation state( with an old governance structure and history of state self rule), one of the richest countries on earth in terms of natural resources (they basically have one of the largest reserves of oil and gas in the world) , a very educated population and skilled workforce (I have worked with a few of them here in UK and Europe, they are all well educated, smart , skilled ,open and well-spoken), largest(or second largest) manpower and population in the middle east i believe, huge landmass etc. In short the country has everything to be a mini world power and they should actually have been one of the fastest growing economies in the world, and they should also have been one of the wealthiest/most industrilised/developed countries on earth. Instead of their youths and people fleeing the country for greener pastures in the West and even migrating to Gulf states like UAE(there are lots of them there) or even to Turkey etc.
Iran should have been at least to the level of development of South Korea to be honest, if not more(given their vast natural resources, landmass and far larger population and educated workforce, while south Korea basically has almost zero natural resources and small landmass to rely on). Yet look at both countries performance globally.
If you and Iranian think the sanctions haven't done anything to Iran then I can only say let them remain as a sanction isolated country then. Lol
Afterall, Ira current state doesn't effect the US as a superpower one bit. Lol It's all up to their leaders foriegn policy , if they think that it serves them better to remain under Western sanctions then who are we to say otherwise? Lol
I personally think their leadership is too religuously, ideologically and emotionally driven to be pragmatic and rational enough to be successful. Unlike the Chinese leadership, who adopted a "keep your head low, develop and bide your time" while they knew they were lagging behind and needed to shelve their ambitions and develop their economy/industries/living standards first. Reason I believe the US is very much worried about China as a global threat, since their leadership can be too rational/pragmatic even today that they are so economically powerful to the point where its difficult to outmeouver them and make them overreact. You don't go around beating your chest while you don't have much power to back it up.
