Eurofighter Typhoon

The development of the new AESA radar for the Euro Fighter plane is underway, but with 13 months late. In fact, the new radar will not be delivered as planned this year, confirmed a report from the German Defense Ministry.

In addition, Germany's share in radar development has increased by 585 million euros compared to the original estimate, the report says. The acceptance and delivery of Block 25 (T3 standard) aircraft continues to be delayed due to a weakness in the demonstration of the new front-end computer revealed in 2017, the report says.

The delays are due to unforeseen difficulties in software development and a persistent divergence between Germany and the United Kingdom on the main function of the radar and the late approval of a new front-end computer. In addition, the limited availability of radar components suffers from a delay in production.

According to current industry estimates, the development plan can continue to be met, but now with a very high software development risk. Eurofighter's industrial partners, as well as the Eurofighter consortium, confirm that the program is proceeding as planned and that this delay does not call into question the development of the new version of Typhoon II.

The capacity of the radar equipment and the Captor-E weapon system should be improved with the required capacity (P3E standard) to equip the Kuwait Air Force in the near future.

The T3-standard Eurofighter whose architecture is based on the Euroradar Consortium's new Electro-Magnetic Scanning Radar radar with a 200-degree field of view. It will be able to carry the Lockheed Martin targeting pod "Sniper" and precision guided weapons, including the MBDA "Brimstone II" air-to-ground missile and the "Storm Shadow" cruise missile. The aircraft will also carry the GBU-12 laser guided bombs. The delivery of the aircraft to the T3 standard will begin in 2020.

So it looks like the Kuwaiti Typhoons will be built in Italy and should be an upgraded version of T3 which should be an amazing aircraft.

It's just sad that they're having so many issues with such a fabulous aircraft. Having a joint consortium certainly has its challenges in the major aspects of the development and production phase, even giants such as Lockheed Martin have similar issues whereas companies such a Dassault Rafale keep almost everything in house with maybe the exception of some weapons systems and HMDs.

Looking forward to seeing the Kuwaiti Typhoons and the 24 Saudi T3s that are equipped with the plumbing for the CFT will look even more amazing once they get the tanks and have them mounted.

KSA is also getting new 48 Typhoons (apparently from the last visit of MBS) which will be equipped like the Kuwaiti ones.. but anyway 2020 is not that far.. and the whole story goes around some software tests and a new onboard computer.. meaning that the radar as such is ready.. but waiting for validation of other Typhoon's new components to be thoroughly tested..
