EU official: Ending Turkey's EU bid would be a "fatal strategic mistake"

That point is far from proven.
Turkey has choosen not to comply with the stated requirements for members.
That is more important than anything else.
look I don't know if you use that "thinking" to feel better... but we know each other that Turkey has nothing to do with "requirement" since EU adhesion was way before "today TR situation"... France was/is the main one to stop TR adhesion in Europe, bc as Sarko said " We need to stay stronger" meaning the top4 of EU do not want to see their places taken out by growing power in the east side... even less when this country is muslim... Just check the new EU members and tell me if they have "those requirement"... like 60% of the eastern european countries...

as if Bulgaria and Romania are " 100% in those requirement" ...

they even wanted to add Ukraine in it... (bf RU intervention)

It's the EU that keeps blocking opening new accession chapters. not Turkey.

Further discussions regarding membership is meaningless unless Turkey shows an intent
to meet the requirements. Erdogan is backtracking.

nothing to do with Erdogan... since France put is Veto for TR adhesion and that was a decade+ ago... way before any Erdogan problems...
Have fun ...

I predict that Bosnia and Herzegovina will be a member before Turkey.
Then maybe Turkey will start to address the real issues, or back off.
Turkey wont become a member even if it fulfilled all requirements 100% for a simple reason, Turkey is soon to become the biggest country population wise exceeding even Germany which means Turkey will be a non-European heavy weight which can shape European policy in case of a membership.
At best once the negotiations are done some countries like France and Austria will do a referandum whether to veto Turkish membership which will stop any step further, the EU is just trying to hold Turkey on its side without giving it the rights that other EU countries enjoy so its all a farce.

French public given veto on Turkey's EU membership (2004)

This procedure is very unfair, no EU candidate had the hurdle of a public referandum to date, othervise Romania and Bulgaria wont be members either but they were destined as puppets anyways, something that wont work with Turkey so we see the hypocritical procedures like this exsample when it comes to Turkey.

What Turkey should do is to end the whole circus and act according to its interests once the time is ripe.

All countries have veto rights on new members.
How they decide is up to them.

It's the economy stupid. Turkey needing or not needing the EU is a worthless discussion, as long as the EU remains your primary trading partner. Once you have already diversified your trade partners, and the money is already in the bank, only then you can freely decide what you want to do. Until then, status quo it is.

. .
Basically the rest of the world. There are many countries (including individual EU member states) that Turkey can sign free-trade and/or preferred economic partnership agreements with.

Turkey cabt sign free trade deals with individual EU member states. Such deals can only be made within EU as a whole.

.
requirements are be a kuffar...

we should just focus on our own thing and make good trade deals like one of our khans wrote it down ~1200 years ago

Don't Join the EU. :woot:

Turkey has become a real prosperous nation being outside the EU I know its on the doorstep however so is Africa and Asia.

Doesnt change the fact that Turkey is being treated unfairly in this regard.
Based on recent developments in Turkey, you could call it visionary.
It is probably better to aimfor a trade deal which benefits both sides.

The article is from 2004, they already declared that they will do a referandum before the negotiations even started, as said even if Turkey was perfectly democratic some European countries will put hurdles that Turkey cant overcome.
Call it whatever you want to feel better, it is and stays a hypocritical and unfair behavior.

But its better for Turkey to stay out with a trade deal as you suggested, that way Turkey can follow a independent foreign policy without having to comply if EU decides to put sanctions on one of our neighbors once again for exsample, othervise Turkey would have to give autonomy to SE or who knows what kind of stupid constraints coming from EU.

Aiming to become part of a camp that doesnt want you anyways is like swimming upriver, better let yourself go with the currents, the political and economic center is shifting towards east, Turkey needs to find its place in the middle, its geographical position has way more potential than just playing the security guard for Europe.
