New Delhi: The European Union has released a statement condemning human rights violations across the world, including in countries such as China and Russia. While the statement uses some very strong language to condemn the rights violations in 13 countries, it makes no mention of India or Jammu & Kashmir.

The EU statement comes in the context of the ongoing 42nd Regular Session of the UNHRC taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 9 to 27 September. It notes that the EU would like to use the ongoing session to “discuss human rights situations that require the Council’s attention”.

The other countries that have been mentioned in the statement include Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Philippines, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Venezuela, Syria, Palestine, Burundi and Myanmar.

No mention of India, Jammu and Kashmir
The Government of India’s 5 August decision to abrogate Article 370 taking away the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir has been criticised by international media. The subsequent curfews and lock-down in the Valley have received a lot of flak too.

UN Human Rights chief Michelle Bachelet had expressed “deep concern” over these restrictions and urged the Indian government to ease them. Voices have also been raised by several global leaders, against “human rights violations” in Kashmir.

In a charged political climate as this, it is significant that EU’s statement makes no mention of Kashmir.

It is to note that India’s relations with the EU have improved rapidly over the past few years. Last year, the EU had released a strategy paper on ways to further strengthen economic and political relations between the two entities. India’s relations with individual member-states have enhanced too. France, a permanent members of the UN Security Council, had backedIndia’s position on J&K.

Pulling no punches on China
While the EU statement makes no mention of India, it harshly critiques human rights violations in Xinjiang province, Tibet and Hong Kong by China.

“The EU is concerned about the existence of political re-education camps, widespread surveillance, and restrictions on freedom of religion or belief, against Uighurs and other minorities in Xinjiang. We urge China to allow meaningful access to Xinjiang for independent observers, including for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights,” notes the statement.

It urges China to ensure rule of law, establish fair trial guarantees and investigate thoroughly reported cases of “arbitrary detentions, mistreatment and torture of human rights defenders and their families”.

Hong Kong also finds a mention, with the EU requesting China to maintain a “high degree of autonomy” given to the city-state under “one country, two systems” principle.

What the statement says about other nations
The report also talks about gross human rights violations in countries such as Syria, Yemen, and Libya — nations that are currently experiencing existential wars.

Among the major global powers, the EU’s statement condemns violations by the Russian Federation, Egypt, Philippines, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

With respect to Russia, the statement notes, “The EU reiterates its serious concerns at the overall situation of human rights in the country. Pressure and restrictions on civil society continue to grow on the basis of restrictive legislation.”

This shows again the hypocritical world we live in. This world is becoming more and more morally corrupt for the business interests of big western corporations and banks.

Indian security forces killed four alleged fighters in occupied Kashmir on Saturday, police said, as the disputed Muslim-majority territory simmers under a lockdown imposed by New Delhi after it revoked its constitutional autonomy in August.

Three were killed in the Batote market area of Jammu where, according to officials, they had allegedly taken a local civilian hostage inside his house.

The hostage was rescued unharmed, a spokesman for the central reserve police force told journalists.

Another Kashmiri was killed in an 'encounter' in Kangan in the north of the region, Dilbagh Singh, director general of Jammu and Kashmir police told AFP.

Singh also said Kashmiri fighters had thrown a grenade in the Safakadal area of Srinagar city but that no one was injured in the incident.

According to Kashmir Media Service, on the other hand, Indian troops killed three youth during cordon and search operations in Naranag area of Ganderbal and three others in Batote area of Ramban district in the Jammu region.

Indian security forces had tightened restrictions in Kashmir and the Hindu-majority Jammu region on Friday, fearing protests ahead of speeches at the UN by the leaders of India and Pakistan.

In his address, Prime Minister Imran Khan warned the body that the dispute with India over Kashmir could escalate into an all-out nuclear war that would have consequences for the world.

The India-occupied region has been facing a clampdown since August 5, when the Indian government nixed Article 370 of the Indian constitution, which conferred a special status on it.

Scores of people, including mainstream and separatist leaders, have been detained or arrested by authorities since the Indian government made the move.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu-nationalist government has faced criticism and calls to restore communications and ease restrictions in Kashmir.

India has repeatedly insisted that Kashmir is purely an internal matter and has bristled at outside comment or suggestions of mediation.

In the eyes of the west, there's nothing wrong or worth mentioning in Kashmir, and they believe they are the ultimate judge in deciding who's wrong and who's not.

China isn't Muslim's friends, neither is Russia, US or EU.Anyone who thinks otherwise is living in a fool's paradise.
We should stop looking towards them for actions regarding our issues.
Only a true Muslim will look out for the interest of his Muslim brothers first.
That's why we should build an Effective Islamic alliance based on economic & military cooperation.Unlike inept OIC.

Their silence on Kashmir doesn't change the ground realities of East Turkestan.
China is as guilty as the west, Israel,India & Myanmar.

And China can help to mediate conflicts between KSA, Iran, Egypt, Turkey.. China is a very close friend to all of them.

EU should understand that their time is running out new alliance under Reciep Tayab Erdogan in which Russia iran malaysia Pakistan Qatarand China will be major countries to chalange these hypocratic nations

Just like Pakistan and Muslims are quite on how China treats it's Muslims in Xinjiang province.

Cause Xinjiang is the most developed region in the whole of central and south Asia, it'll take India decades to get what Xinjiang's standard of development now.

You know what was idiotic of China?
China could have had significant backing by 57 Muslim nations if they looked ahead instead of at the present.
Imagine a China that lets Uyghur & Han Muslims religious freedom, a China that stopped savage Burmese regime from ethnically cleansing Rohingyas, who mediated between KSA, Iran, Egypt & Turkey, condemned against illegal Israeli occupation.
You would have had the support of nearly 2 billion Muslims & 57 countries. You could've been the country to whom others would have flocked to because you represented something better than the US hegemony. It would have improved your image all over the world.
But you didn't. And you have lost your chance.

You sound like you want to put Muslims against the rest of the world, I hope that's only your personal opinion cause this fantasy can be a disaster for Muslims around the world.
Au contraire, I want Muslims to be together as one.Not against the whole world. Against only those who would seek to harm us.

Developed doesn't mean jack when the people are being prosecuted.

Thanks, China's already got backings of all Muslim countries. Even Erdogan didn't say anything about China at UNGA, the only bunch that makes noise are the west.
