RAF VALLEY, NORTH WALES: From this, the bleak windswept bowl within the Welsh mountains that is known to aviation aficionados around the world as the home of the Hawk jet trainer craft, surprising feedback on India's linguistic pride and joy - English, as she is spoke.

On Monday, the tail end of 11 months training for six ace Indian Air Force pilots on the Hawk jets, British instructors, officials and even our own men acknowledged that the biggest logistical problems the Indians faced was "the English language".

Squadron leader Gareth Roberts, lead instructor to the Indian pilots, told TOI: "The initial difficulty was with the English language. When you're in the air and hearing instructions on the intercom, it can be difficult."

Agreed Flying Officer Manoj Garg, the Lucknow boy who won a course-completion prize for "most improved" pilot: "A major difficulty was the language."

Dave Corfield, British Aerospace Systems project director for the India-Advanced Jet Trainers Programme, said: "English is not their first language, it's a foreign language for them."

The feedback may come as a shock in India as linguists have agreed with big business from around the globe that India is one of the most accomplished English-spea-king countries in the world .
The only thing is whe they speak they move there heads right and left which is a odd.

.
Thats the good thing though, when they hear commands from early warning systems they will move their heads left and right for a Pakistani aircraft.

.
Interestingly enough, I see that with most "desis" around here also - Indian / Pakistanis. Initially the accent will throw you for a curve, even though it is english in unexpected ways. For example, the last 4 digits of my phone number is 1003. Desis will say it as 1, double-zero, 3. Wow!

.
How do you say it? I generally say it as, One Double O Three

. .
One, O, O, 3!!! all in them durn linguistics huh?

u see you cant blame them for doing that.thats the (england)english way of saying it.and most in pakistan and india try talking like english not Americans also there is a big difference in some spelling to.

. . . .
Muradk Sir,

Hawk is a trainer jet, that being the case what is the need of a training excercise for IAF pilots to fly a trainer!!!

Its suppose to be a easy jet which a newbie can fly before he graduates to the supersonic jets , right?

You should see which pilots were allowed to fly MKI in India...There was a report and to be honest... Pakistan has certain development for pilots. Starting at lower F7 and ending with higher Mirage or F16. The Indians do not have that so you have MKI pilots that have just finished Kiran... I doubt that they present big danger.

About English. They surely cannot beat the French. France is in the middle of Europe but one needs lot more to understand French pilots...

Ok its funny about the zero thing...because we were always told to use "zero" rather than "oh" because it could cause confusion over the radio. And the police here use the same system.

Second I have been to that valley and seen Hawk pilots being trained in low level flying...

Well if thats true, then its very stupid of IAF.

But i dont think so. What i have heard is that after the basic flight training they are put into the MIg 21s and not the MKIs. As of now who ever i know and have seen looked old enough to have enough flying experience.

Can u post the report here.

What Munir is said is true, we dont have system where the best or the most experienecd pilots are put in the same catagory of planes or squandrons

After getting trained from Kirans, etc, the pilots progress slowly to Su-30MKI's. They dont directly get to ride the MKI's.
