Engineers say A380 should be grounded

Aviation is a expensive thing. Sometimes artificially expensive. Take a light bulb for example. The same light bulb I might get at the corner store for 5 dollars might be sold from a aircraft parts vendor for 25 dollars. Parts have to be certified to be used on a US aircraft. Compliance with regulations and testing increase the prices. Making sure items pass a flammable test comes to mind.

Sir, one question: do you do the Simulation experiments for the planes?

Considering the massive stresses the wings undergo in order to generate lift for that monster, I'm not surprised. Honestly imo, there is no need for another super-jumbo. The 777 has got it all right.

I am not involved with aircraft manufacture. Only maintenance. There are videos on youtube that show aircraft testing if your interested in watching. Here is a video of 787. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sA9Kato1CxA&feature=related

I am sure Airbus does their own testing in a similar manor. There is a company called Rans. They make aircraft you can build in your garage. They have some flight testing videos on their website. Very interesting. I could get involved with engine testing but I rather work on aircraft than just engine testing.

Metal fatigue is a regular part of aviation. Every time a aircraft pressurizes it grows in size. You can actually take a string and wrap it around a fuselage when its pressurized and when its not pressurized and you can measure the difference. This work hardens metals. Over time cracks develop. Every airliner is prone to cracking. Almost all cracks are found before anything bad happens. You do not hear about them in the news. Engineering gets involved and issues a repair to fix the area and prevent further cracking. When its a reoccurring issue they will issue regular checks to that area. Some of these checks are quite frequent. Will be quite interesting to see what they found.

The bugs will eventually get worked out of the airframe over the years. I am sure it will be a reliable aircraft. A380 is a awesome endeavor let alone the thought of something so big can fly. I marvel every time I see an aircraft become airborne.

One does not have the luxury of choosing between Boeing or Airbus aircraft in a busy season. One just wants the first flight out of their whether it is a Boeing, Cessna, Airbus or a Tupolev
