Energy corridors: Pakistan provides shortest routes, says Zardari

President Asif Ali Zardari has said Pakistan provides the shortest routes to energy corridors to the world and its ports and territory offer most viable route from energy rich to energy starved countries.

Pakistan is strategically located to exploit its economic and manpower potential for its own prosperity and of different regions of the world, he said while addressing World Economic Forum at The Dead Sea near Jordanian capital Amman on Saturday.

A special session "A Conversation with Asif Ali Zardari‚ President of Pakistan" was devoted to Pakistan at the Forum.

Pakistan is located on political fault lines for being neighbour of Afghanistan which has been witnessing great game of the world power for decades.

Pakistan has been affected by events in Afghanistan and natural calamities but its people have great resilience to withstand all such challenges, he noted.

Zardari said Pakistan has a huge population.

China converted its population into an engine of economic growth and Pakistan too has the potential to do so as majority of its population is young.

He said there was reverse brain-drain in countries.

Pakistani manpower can take advantage of the phenomenon by offering services in different fields.

Pakistani universities are now producing engineers‚ scientists‚ doctors, nurses that can fulfil requirements of the world.

"We are using latest technology in different spheres of life.

The government has taken several initiatives to empower women and one of them was introduction of Benazir Card."

He said Pakistan is a responsible country and wants to contribute to make the world prosper.

At the moment Pakistan is contributing largest contingent of soldiers to the UN peace-keeping missions around the globe.

Replying to a question, President said there are wrong perceptions about Pakistan in relation to terrorism as the country itself is "a victim of terror.

My spouse Benazir Bhutto too became victim of terror." In his introductory remarks‚ Founder and Executive Chairman of World Economic Forum Klaus Schwab said the world is looking to Pakistan to help confront new realities and realise shared goal of peace and prosperity.

Every other day I am seeing a new thread about the energy corridor or pipe line. It is pipe dream. Pakistan can only supply to India with some economic possibility. China and other country pipe line is just a pipe dream.

If there is pipeline from Iran to India by pakistan, then India will have huge leverage over pakistan.

How will India have a leverage over Pakistan. We can stop the gas anytime because the gas will run through our territory. India is the one dreaming, you've been dreaming since 1947 to have a leverage over Pakistan, but India has no leverage or influence over two of its large neighbours Pakistan and China.

And we dont need India, India is not the only immediate neighbour of Pakistan. We have Central Asia and Middle East to our west and China to our north-east.

Lets say pakistan invests huge amount on the pipeline. We buy gas for couple of months, after that we say will get directly from Iran.

Pakistan will be a big bag holder.

Yea go ahead and build your under sea pipeline dream  Any discussions with Iran for your under sea pipeline dream? NO Any signed agreements with Iran for your under sea pipeline dream? NO And still you indians are :blah:

Mark my words. We dont need india for anything.

For once Zardari Made sense

I have to agree with his assessment

Few years back we would not have imagined India as a MFN status

A few years back we would not have imagined India supporting Pakistan in United Nation council

So there are alot of things that go towards making Pakistan the shortest distance

Ideally the plan should be

2 Pipelines

Iran - Pakistan - China
Iran - Pakistan - India

Easily achievable if Uncle you now who did not interfered , trade can naturally flourish

Third line
Turkmenistan - Afghanistan - Pakistan - India

Pakistan is situated in most fortunate place on earth if consider a non-oil producer(in large quntity) country. For example it recieved and recieving huge aid from west because it can influence in afghanistan and now pipeline

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is developing an international standards infrastructure to make Pakistan as the most attractive and shortest transit route between South and Central Asia, said Federal Minister for Communications Dr Arbab Alamgir Khan.

The minister said the government and the people of Pakistan are determined to transform country into a developed, industrialised, just and knowledge-based economy by using its geo-political location and by enhancing economic partnership particularly in the region.

He informed the seminar participants the government of Pakistan has launched National Trade Corridor Improvement Programme (NTCIP) to improve transport infrastructure and improve regional connectivity. This programme, with an investment cost of $6-9 billion, will reduce present travel time by 50 percent and operating cost by 10 percent. With the introduction of reforms supplemented by a strong investment programme, the minister added, NTCIP has evolved a strategic framework to meet the challenges: modernise and streamline trade and transport logistics, practices and customs; improve port efficiency, reduce the costs for port users and enhance port management accountability; create a commercial and accountable environment in Pakistan Railways; modernise the trucking industry; sustain delivery of an efficient, safe and reliable National Highways System; develop along NTC, the energy corridor linking China and Afghanistan/CARs.

Under an overall improvement programme border crossing are also being upgraded to international standards.

Agreements with Republics of Uzbekistan and Turkey in the field of Road Transport have also been signed, he added, and are being operationalised in the near future. Bus services are also being operated between Pakistan and India as well as Pakistan and Afghanistan, he told.

At the end of the meeting, Chengdu Declaration and Plan of Action were approved unanimously, which will facilitate movement of goods and people between the member countries. During the meeting, the minister also met Minister for Transport of China Li Shenghi, Governor of Sichuan Province Jiang Jufeng and several ministers from European and Asian Countries.
