SpaceX’s Starship rocket reached space for the first time on Saturday though both the ship and its main booster were lost minutes into the flight, dealing another setback to Elon Musk’s ambition of carrying humans to Mars.

The 400ft-tall rocket — the most powerful ever launched — left its launch pad alongside the Gulf of Mexico in Texas just after 7am local time and rose above a height of 100km, the point at which space begins, before the mishaps that affected its first failed launch in April recurred.After nearly three minutes of flight the spacecraft successfully separated from its first stage, a step further than SpaceX managed in the first test.


However the first part of the rocket, known as a super heavy booster, spun out of control and failed to return to the ground as planned.SpaceX eventually hopes to reuse both stages of the rocket to bring down the cost of flight, though it had only planned to land the booster during Saturday’s test.

The engines on the rocket’s second stage, bearing the spaceship that Nasa hopes to use to carry astronauts to the Moon later this decade, fired successfully and nearly completed their scheduled six-minute burn before SpaceX reported that it had lost contact with the craft.

I have watched the video, and the first stage of the rocket did explode when reaching an altitude of 90 km.

Nevertheless, it made a progression compared to the first launch.

The progression of the starship has motivated China to speed up its CZ-9 launch around 2030. :coffee:

Yes, the lower stage booster exploded after separating from the upper stage Starship...but the upper stage clearly shows 100km being passed in the bottom right..Starship made it into Space.

It just a test and teh rocket not even reached orbit, the amount of flag waving is just as bad as indian rocket watchers who predict india will build manned space station in near future when in reality they cant even launch man into space.

the american flagged indian account are so obvious in spreading western fake news and propaganda in PDF
 
Starship has loftier goals than CZ-9. It's main engines are also ready whereas China is currently running lots of ground tests for CZ-9's main engines (and doing very well) but schedule of program is roughly 5 to 10 years behind Starship's Raptors. The two are not comparable apart from being US and China's respective heaviest lifters when ready and in service, with Starship's program being at least 5 years ahead of CZ-9's program.

LM-5/ CZ-5 is still an excellent heavy lifter. It's also silly to compare it with Starship. One is an experimental in early stage trials and iteration process while LM-5 has been in active service for many years now. While that's China's current heaviest lifter, it is one of very, very few heavy lifter vehicles in the world. In terms of nations, only US, China, and Russia even have heavy lifter rockets. Many Russians have doubts over Starship's viability as a platform but it is certainly the most impressive and ambitious program around. And obviously the furthest ahead in terms of program schedule.

In terms of super heavies, apart from US and China not a single nation or union (EU) have even programs around with tangible effort towards achieving goals. For China to be even closing this gap with US over the last few decades is impressive considering how competent US is in this field. I'm already impressed with LM-5 and LM-7 and what those can do for China in terms of ambitious space missions and lunar goals. LM-9 is a bit of a fund drain in my opinion but super heavies need to be done and work needs to start somewhere I guess. Those progams for China just have diminishing returns in my opinion esp when factoring respective funds available.

The CZ-9 will have a reusable LEO of 150-160 tonnes, and the expendable LEO will also exceed 250 tonnes.

If the CZ-9 also uses the stainless steel like the Starship, it will weigh more than 5000 tonnes.

Musk wants to save cost, thus he chooses the stainless steel.

The CZ-9 will use the lighter composite materials, and weighs about 4400 tonnes, but its LEO will exceed that of the Starship. :coffee:

With how well the pad and water cooled steel plate performed, perfect first stage ascent with high reliability of Raptor engines and stage separation, I expect Flight 3 within 2-3 months.

We also had a long duration burn of Starship just prior to coast phase.

You haven't even figured out how to make any of your current rockets reusable and you change the CZ-9 design more often than Hollywood celebrity wardrobes.

The Falcon 9 will have successfully landed for the 250th time within the next two weeks while you have successfully landed zero. The Falcon 9 was not originally designed to land..it was an afterthought that was successfully implemented. How come you guys can't figure out how to do that?

We are getting close, and now it is 100% confirmed that the near future CZ-5 will be reusable.


Even the CZ-10 will be partially reusable, and the CZ-10 is overall closer in aspect with the SLS block 1.

The CZ-10 will have its maiden flight by 2026. And with the progression made by the Starship, the CZ-9 will be very likely moving forward for a 2030 maiden flight.

When China has set up for a maiden flight, it will make sure that the maiden flight will be 100% successful.
 
I thought the idea of ..% successful was invented by Indians...

For us, anything below 100% should not be considered as successful.

Just like the 2017 launch of the CZ-5, the rocket did perform normally, but the satellite had failed to enter inter the orbit. Then, it was automatically considered as a failure, and there is such thing as partial success in our dictionary.

I think first stage of starship 33 engines are inspired by soviet era N1 moon rocket

it's not useless.

i have informed many shias and sunnis about the situation and israelis now know hamas operation was legal.

i've also said the best way forward for this for all parties would be greater israel.. Sunnis are acting as part of Nato.

I also showed a new saudi map with a plan to steal persian land and found out swedish leftists are linked to 'christian' facists (and sunnis) through kurds (unless the account was an israeli account i got info from, but it's close to the current vibe from sunnis anyway)
