A worker stands under covered elephant statues at the Ambedkar Park on January 11, 2012 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India. India's Election Commission has ordered the covering up of statues, the symbol of the Bahujan Samaj Party, ahead of next month's elections in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The commission believes that the statues' visibility may sway voters, and create an un-level playing field. Mayawati, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, has constructed huge public parks in Noida and in the state capital of Lucknow over her 5 years in power. The parks are strewn with statues of herself, other historical figures and also of the Bahujan Samaj Party's symbol, the elephant.

they sure wrapped up the pachyderm snuggly enough . you can clearly make out the animal .

. . .
Mayawati has cleverly used public funds to display her party symbol across the state.

Maybe the EC should ask her to change her party symbol.

.
Will EC ban bicycles bcs its the symbol of BSP or destroy every lotus as its the symbol of BJP.

.
^^
Displaying party symbols is not the issue. The issue is using public money and public space (like state owned parks) to do so. Ironically, this covering up operation cost the state another few crores - several kilometres of cloth had to be purchased and several people paid to do it. And the cloth happened to be in Mayawati's favourite colour.

Just remove the elephants and distribute them throughout India as a mark of Bhen Mayawati's good will :D
