MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit Egypt on Monday for talks with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
The two leaders will discuss cooperation in many areas, among which the military sphere.
"The military cooperation between the two countries is set by the vision of the presidents, but the signing of military contracts and military cooperation is done between the two ministries of defense," said Major General Hisham al-Halabi, advisor to Nasser Higher Military Academy and a member of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs. Military cooperation between Moscow and Cairo has been around for a long time.
"Egypt is aiming to diversify the sources of weapons because its policy of armament is based on two points. The first point is the continuous modernization of military equipment, the second is diversifying the sources of arms, and Russia is a source of diversification," he said. Egypt, because the Egyptian armed forces have a strategic experience in cooperation with Russia in the field of armaments, Russian weapons have existed for decades and helped win the war of 73 by Egypt.
Nasser's senior military adviser explained that Egypt had previous experience with Russian weapons, and there are indications that there is a weapon coming from Russia, but we do not know its type yet.
He stressed that Egypt has a certain standard in the declaration of arms deals with Russia and other countries, pointing out that the Egyptian army does not announce the arms deals before they arrive in Egypt, as happened with the French helicopter carriers Mistral, the Rafale fighters and other Deals.
Al-Halabi pointed out that the cooperation between Egypt and Russia is not only military, but also cooperation to confront the terrorist threats facing the region decisively such as Syria, stressing that Russia has experience in this matter, where Russian-Syrian cooperation succeeded in helping Syrian forces control Many areas.
In the view of Al-Halabi, a large part of the "Daesh" militants were not killed, and moved from Syria to other countries, and after the success of the Russian-Syrian alliance to eliminate "Daesh", Russia can take advantage of the decline of US popularity in the region towards the issues of the Middle East, where A new change in the region is the American announcement that the US embassy in Israel will be transferred to Jerusalem and recognized it as the capital of Israel. This is a golden opportunity for Russia to make the Russian role credible in the face of the American role. Washington in the peace process is unfair, not neutral and totally on the side of Israel.
