France will hand over the FREMM (Frégate Européenne Multi-Missions) frigateNormandie (D651) to the Egyptian Navy on 23 June at the company's shipyard in Lorient, Western France.

The ship will retain its pennant number, although despite reports suggesting it will be re-named Al-Cairo , its new name is still to be revealed.

The ceremony will take place in the presence of Rear Admiral Osama Rabie, Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Navy, and Admiral Bernard Rogel, Chief of Staff of the French Navy.

The 5,200-tonne ship was scheduled to be the French Navy's second Aquitaine-class frigate, with delivery to the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) on behalf of the French procurement directorate Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA) originally planned for late 2014.

However the development of a government-to-government arrangement, that culminated in an agreement signed on 16 February 2015, saw the ship heading for Egypt instead.

The arrangement will see DCNS undertake outfitting work including translation of man-machine interfaces into Arabic, and the delivery of logistics support, spares, and maintenance services, as well as training activity alongside DCI-NAVFCO.

The ship will retain its original SYLVER A43 vertical launching system (VLS) (for Aster 15 missiles purchased by Egypt); the Sagem Vigy MM fire-control system; Thales' UMS 4110 CL and CAPTAS 4 sonar systems; the Nexter Systems NARWHAL 20B remote weapon stations; DCNS's Contralto-V anti-torpedo decoy launchers and Sagem's NGDS multiple decoy launchers; and launchers for MBDA Exocet MM 40 Block 3 anti-ship missiles and Eurotorp MU90 Impact lightweight torpedoes.

DCNS will, however, remove both its own SYLVER A70 VLS (that fires the MBDA Missile de Croisière Naval [MdCN] long-range land-attack cruise missile) and the Elettronica Radar-Electronic Counter Measures (R-ECM) system.

The frigate will sail for Egypt around 20 July, before taking part in Egypt's new Suez Canal inauguration ceremony on 6 August.

now that's dumb ( no aster 30 , no scalp naval , no CM system ) we basically bought a 800 million euro Gowind 2500 but with aster 15 not a mica VL

@Taygibay @Gabriel92

It's an old ship not a new ship?

@Superboy It's brand new, was not in full ops yet. Got diverted before full induction.

@Kamal_dbk I fullt agree my friend! Especially the ECM kit.
Let's both look for the reason from our respective sides, shall we?

Good evening nonetheless bro, Tay

i don't know what reasons that made us accept to take it from france while we can make a better deal with the italian version of the fremm and what would replace the ECM kit maybe the old one in the la fayette ? the gowind deal was so good and with tot but the fremm deal is ridiculously expensive and useless it was better to fit the Gowind with aster and bring it in big numbers that just throwing hundred millions on this crap

FREMM deal is a strategic desicion indeed but lack of electronic warfare capabilities along with long range missiles and maybe other small things that is not issued on article will reduce the capabilities dramatically.

Unfortunately, More or less, It is what countries are going to meet When It is purchased off the shelf until It was relied heavily on own source and engineering power. Noone wants to export their cutting edge technology to other countries so It is either offered downgraded variants or capabilities are restricted thanks to software limitations.

I still haven't found all the details I wanted on that FREMM of yours but my source only mention
the withdrawal of the MDCN cruise missiles and not that of the ESM kit.
One says the ship is to be configured as Anti_air / air defense so that bypassing those equipments
would not make much sense.
I'll keep looking.

Good day all, Tay.

Egypt economy is not rocketing either it is as oue economy but egypt buy heavt stuff but when we talk about our navy need heavy stuff we been said eco crisis

@Taygibay so Janes maybe wrong about removing the ECM ?

and till this moment i don't know if they gonna replace the Sylver a70 which they removed by another sylver a43 or it will be like the Moroccan one with only 16 cells

@Kamal_dbk
Found it! I was sadly right about the reason :
DCNS Transfered the FREMM Frigate Tahya Misr to the Egyptian Navy
"As was the case for the Royal Morrocan Navy’s Mohammed VI FREMM, the former Normandie saw its second row of vertical launch system (SYLVER A70, used to launch MBDA’s naval cruise missiles) and the two SIGEN R-ECM electronic warfare and jammer systems removed because of export limitations for these sensitive equipments. The SATCOM antenna for the Syracuse system was also taken down because it can only be used by the French Navy."

Sorry mate, Tay.

Sorry mate, Tay.

the important question here is the frigate will be transferred to our navy without a jamming system !! or it will be replaced by other system

But but Kamal mate ??? You knew that and/or did not read the article?

No jammers! Export limitations

As for replacing it, that can be done for sure if you guys find a seller.
The question will then be two-fold :
Will DCNS do/allow the integration ( not likely if the system is Russian or Chinese )?
How well will it perform otherwise as one of the qualities of modern war toys is being a unified system?

At present, no jammers as was the case with Morocco.

Later, Tay.

this is ridiculous tbh having 6000 tons frigate without jammers and i can't even find any ongoing negotiation with any other jammer to replace the one removed , italy have some jammers that can sell i think

The jammers removed are 50% produced with Elettronica a special JV for the FREMM program.
I posted the link for you in another thread.

Good night my friend, Tay.

yeah i read the whole thing , i hope dcns got some futuristic upgrades to their export clients as the export version of the fremm is pretty too much downgraded

Hello, this is my first post in PDF ,
I believe there will be another ECM system on the Egyptian fremm ....
Some talks about scorpion 2 system of Thales ...and ESM system still active on Tahya Masr.
