Al Azhar is the highest institution of Sunni world and her Grand Imam is closest to "Pope equivalent" in Sunni Muslim world. Right now, a bunch of people try burnning it down.

There are even graffiti accusing Al-Azhar's Grand Imam, Ahmed El-Tayeb, the below.

"El-Tayeb you are a spy, you sold the turban and religion."

One killed as Islamist students and police clash in Cairo| Reuters

One student was killed on Saturday and scores were arrested when supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood clashed with Egyptian police at the Cairo campus of Al-Azhar University, state media reported.

Two college buildings caught fire in Saturday's violence. State TV broadcast footage of black smoke billowing from the faculty of commerce building and said "terrorist students" had set the agriculture faculty building on fire as well.

Police arrested 101 students for possession of makeshift weapons including petrol bombs, the state news agency reported. Calm had been restored, and scheduled exams had begun after the morning clashes.

Al-Azhar, a respected centre of Sunni Islamic learning, has for months been the scene of protests against what the Brotherhood calls a "military coup" that deposed Islamist Mohamed Mursi as president after a year in office.

Insha'Allah all the vandals who try to destroy Al-Azhar and other Islamic places of worship and study will be punished.

Don't know what is happening since I have not followed the news much this week.

Actually, there are dynamics between Muslim Brotherhood, Al Azhar and KSA Al Saud family, which is quite a well kept secret, other than to the very well informed people. Right now, the differences between the three forces are in danger of manifesting publicly, threatening the unity of Sunni Muslim.

The MB is a political group. Nothing to do with Islam. Al-Saud are a ruling family. Nothing to do with Islam either. Which Islamic authority do MB have? They are some political group founded in Egypt in 1929. Some consider it as a political cult.

Al-Azhar though is a place of learning for Sunni Muslims and have been that for centuries. Muslims in Muslim lands should not be hungry for power and fight against fellow Muslims. I don't trust political parties that aim to get a monopoly by using Islam. Not any different than political parties that has nothing to do with Islam.

If those people now are going to target and attack Egyptian Muslims (civilians and not) then they have lost all of my respect.
