Egypt hopes to head ‘Arab nuclear family’
Sunday, November 04, 2007

By Alain Navarro

Egypt has emerged at the forefront of a new push by Arab nations to build nuclear power plants in the volatile Middle East even as the West is locked in a standoff with Iran over its atomic drive.

President Hosni Mubarak announced on Tuesday that Egypt planned to construct a series of nuclear power plants, relaunching a programme shelved 20 years ago following the Chernobyl disaster.

Egypt’s move follows similar announcements by other Arab nations including the oil-rich Gulf states and former international pariah state Libya - despite growing tensions between Iran and the West over its own nuclear programme. “There is an internal political dimension to the decision by Mubarak, who is telling Iran that they will not allow Tehran to be the sole regional power to control the atom,” said Antoine Basbous, director of the Arab World Observatory based in Paris.

Cairo’s announcement that it would seek nuclear capabilities to ensure its future energy security while ruling out any military ambitions, received the immediate backing of Iran’s arch-foe Washington.

“It is a right for all Arabs,” Mubarak thundered at the Arab summit in Riyadh in March, sparking talk it was time for an “Arab nuclear family”. Among those seeking nuclear power are Algeria, Jordan, Libya, the six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council including OPEC powerhouse Saudi Arabia, and Yemen.

GCC heads of state are due to report on the feasibility of a regional nuclear programme at their annual summit in Qatar in December. The United States has 103 nuclear power stations, followed by France with 59, Japan with 55 and Russia with 31 fully operational facilities and seven being built. Asia is also investing heavily in atomic energy and experts argue that should an alliance develop between Egypt and China - and possibly including Russia - this could weaken Washington’s ties to Cairo, its traditional ally. While Egypt, the most populous country in the Arab world with 76 million people, and energy-poor Jordan could justify the switch to nuclear energy, the choice is more difficult for the Gulf countries, sitting on huge oil and gas reserves.

“It is Iran’s desire to accelerate its suspect nuclear programme that has encouraged its Arab neighbours to push forward and pursue a nuclear course,” said Basbous. Egypt and Saudi Arabia, which vie for leadership of the largely Sunni Muslim Arab world, have never hidden their concerns over the nuclear ambitions of Iran - a Shiite power - and its influence in Iraq.afp

how long before IAF bombs the nuclear facility?

.
Dont think IsAF would want to get in trouble for that. Egypt is fully supported by the United States, and is much stronger than Syria.

yeah i think this would be a mistake the new arab army is trained by the americans and the egyptians will be a cause of a world of hurt for the israeli. i thought that washington wouldn't want these states to have nukes. its strange that havn't condemned the move because this can easily lead to escalation. i don't the saudi's need nukes. i think they are under our nuclear umbrella

If they are built under IAEA agreements why should anyone bomb them. I doubt Pakistan will be allowed to supply any technology. Most probably it will come from Russia, Canadians or US or French and will be tightly controlled. They have also signed the NPT but not the CTBT.

NTI: Country Overviews: Egypt: Nuclear Overview

On 19 September 2006, Gamal Mubarak, son of President Hosni Mubarak and assistant secretary general of the ruling National Democratic Party, announced at the party conference that Egypt should pursue nuclear energy to meet its growing energy needs. President Hosni Mubarak echoed this statement at the end of the conference on 21 September 2006. Since these statements, the Supreme Energy Council has been meeting to come up with a plan to revive Egypt's nuclear power program, which has been frozen since the disaster at Chernobyl in 1986. Electricity and Energy Minister Hasan Younes has put forth plans to construct a 1,000 megawatt power station at Al-Dabah, and possibly three other 600 megawatt power stations. It is estimated that the first reactor could be completed within a decade and the last could be finished as soon as 2020. Thus far, Egypt has not made any mention of pursuing uranium enrichment technology.

The plan has been well received both within the country and by other members of the international community. The United States, France, and Israel have stated that they do not see the Egyptian nuclear power program as a threat to proliferation. Also, Russia, China, and the United States have indicated interest in becoming involved in the project.

Why would any of the above mention nation US France Israel will see egyptian nuclear programe as a threat after all Hosni Mubarak is their guy. This is how world politics work, a nuclear egypt is alright but a nuclear iran is not alright. Iran should go nuclear and not only for peaceful purpose but pursue weapons as well. Iran is a free nation and should not follow the double standards of the west

Dont think IsAF would want to get in trouble for that. Egypt is fully supported by the United States, and is much stronger than Syria.

When The Osirak reactor was bombed, Iraq was supported by US and Russia against Iran, and had weapons from both the superpowers. That didnt prevent IsAF from blowing the Osirak reactor to dust.

If Egypt pursues nuclear weapons, and Israel feels threatened, they'll definitely attack.

This is one reason why i admire the israelis. They place national inerest above all and refuses to be bullied or coerced.

This is halarious United States will support Egypt?? lollllllllllllll lolllllllllllllll hahahah hahaha
Very funny. Dear Sir US gets friendly and than trash like no one has trashed before. Example>>Pakistan. United States in not willing to upgrade Egyptian F-16s with to support BVR forget about going nuclear with Egypt No Arab State will have any Nuclear Power Plants. Mark my words "Never". United States does not want any more trouble!!

So I guess that gives them the right to kill and exterminate the Palestinian population because the Palestinians' birth rate is almost 2-3 times more than the Israelis. It's all about national interests right? The Arab population is growing and it can devour the Israeli population, and killing the Arabs is all about national interests.

Hurting and using Arab babies as target practice is all about national interest right? Pre-Emptive attacks will only lead a country's fall in the long run. Israel is one of the most hated country in the world. If US can't provide them with money do you really think they'll survice? The Muslim world will regain their land back!

after the recent isreal attacks
i have lost all respect for arab nations
they could go f_ck themselves cause they arent gonna go anywhere in the near future
