An American political columnist says Egyptians are likely to follow in the footsteps of Iranians to establish an Islamic government.

In a column for Press TV, Kevin Barrett drew a parallel between the ongoing unrest in Egypt and the heady days leading to the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.

Will the Egyptian people allow foreign-funded stooges of imperialism to stymie their Islamic revolution? Or will they follow in the footsteps of Iran, and take their country back by rising up en masse and demanding nothing less than a complete break with Zionism and imperialism, and the establishment of a genuinely independent Islamic Egypt?” he asked.

Barrett noted that most Egyptians are willing to “restore Islam to the central place it held prior to the Western imperialist onslaught” similar to the 1979 revolution of Iran.

“Islamic activists in Egypt face a rich, clever, ruthless, heavily-armed minority dedicated to preserving the corrupt status quo....The Egyptian military is armed to the teeth by its Zionist-owned American benefactors,” wrote Barrett.

He went on to say that today's like pre-1979 Iran, Egypt “features an overwhelming majority who support Islamic governance and oppose Zionism and imperialism.”

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has announced that a referendum on a new constitution will be held on December 15, 2012.

On Friday, Morsi’s opponents held a massive demonstration in Cairo’s Tahrir Square to protest against the decree giving the president expanded powers and to express their opposition to the draft constitution.

On November 22, Morsi issued a decree declaring that no judicial body can dissolve the Constituent Assembly, which was writing the draft of the constitution.

On November 30, the Constituent Assembly approved the final draft.

The decree allows the president to take "any decision or measure to protect the revolution." It also makes decisions and laws issued by the president "final and not subject to appeal."

The Egyptians launched a revolution against the pro-Israeli regime in January 2011, which eventually brought an end to the 30-year dictatorship of former President Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.
