Israeli F-4s Actually Fought North Korean MiGs During the Yom Kippur War

Even if the McDonnell Douglas F-4 was developed as interceptor in response to the need of the U.S. Navy to protect their aircraft carrier, the ultimate version of the Phantom II was the USAF F-4E, a multi role fighter which was also sold to several air forces around the world. One of the countries to receive the F-4E was Israel that bought the first examples in 1969 and later made the Phantom the mainstay of its Air Power bringing the F-4 in all the major Arab-Israeli conflicts.

In 1973, during the Yom Kippur War, the Israeli Air force (IAF) found itself facing an Arab Air Forces coalition which was composed not only by Egyptian and Syrian fighter squadrons, but also by units from Algeria, Iraq, Libya and … North Korea, that deployed a MiG-21 squadron to Bir Arida to protect Egypt’s south.

Obviously, at the time, IAF pilots didn’t know that some of the MiGs they would face were from North Korea. However the first engagement between North Korean pilots and Israeli pilots took place on Oct. 6, 1973 when two F-4 Kurnass (Sledgehammer) pairs from 69 and 119 Squadrons were scrambled from Ramat David Air Base for a patrol over the Gulf of Suez sector.

The F-4s of the two squadrons were teamed together and the 69 pair (which had their crews formed by Shadmi and Gur on board the first aircraft and Shpitzer and Ofer on the other one) leading the mission.

It was only after a long patrol, when the jets were already low on fuel, that the F-4s were vectored towards Egypt’s west-northwest: although the high altitude, between 20,000 and 25,000 feet, Gur was able to detect with its radar a pair of bandits down below, very hard to lock. Thanks to the GCI (Ground Control Intercept) the crews could track the two enemy aircraft and enter in the range for an AIM-7 shot, despite the ground clutter. But due to the bad weather they were unable to see their wingman, so Shadmi and Gur decided not to lunch the Sparrow.

Just few seconds later the two F-4s’ crews identified the two bandits as a couple of MiG-21s and immediately engaged them: one of the MiG disappeared, while the other Fishbed stayed for a 1 vs 2 combat. The North Korean pilot was very good and, despite the fact it was alone against the two Kurnass (plus the two 119 Squadron F-4s which were flying overhead), he tried to slow the speed of the dogfight. But the two Israeli fighters maintained high speed, they got into missiles launch position and Shadmi and Gur launched an AIM-9D. After a second, they launched another Sidewinder which was followed by a third AIM-9D launched by Shpitzer and Ofer from the other Kurnass.

All the missiles exploded very close to the MiG, but the Fishbed continued flying. At this point, the Israeli Kurnass were already low on fuel and they turned east heading home. Gur looked at the MiG and while it turned west, he noticed the Fishbed was leaving a white smoke trail. Suddenly after the F-4s crossed the coastline, Gur saw the trail of a SAM and then an explosion at 20,000 feet, where before there was the MiG-21: Egyptians shot down one of their aircraft!

The pilots knew only when the war ended that the MiG-21 belonged to North Korea, while after the Kurnass landed, Shadmi and Gur shared the kill with Shpitzer and Ofer because they were notified that the MiG had crashed. But the crews told what they saw and in fact later it was confirmed by the IAF Intelligence that the Egyptian Air Defense Force shot down one of their Fishbeds.

Egypt was the very first country to close its diplomatic ties with North Korea, a country who sent a squadron of Migs to defend the country against Israel..
Egypt is now the only country, who solds its principles, pride and whatever dignity it has left, for a couple old South Korean frigates, and to recover $120 millions dollars that the Trump administration puncture from the yearly peace treaty funds she gets from the US...

That is Ceylal for you. He is single-handedly responsible for this section of PDF (one of the most peaceful and informative) being dragged down.

He gets banned time and time again (once again as we all can see) and returns with the exact same behavior. He sadly never learns. I don't recall that he has behaved like this always. Not sure what is going on. Even his few Algerian countrymen are tired of him here!

This is just another such example. He has an sick obsession about numerous Arab countries (Egypt and Morocco in particular with KSA and Iraq not being far behind). Most Arab users here will tell you this.

We want him here (I at least) as he is an active Algerian user (we want more Arab users here who can give different perspectives and have different views) but he is unable to engage in discussions without insults, outright moronic posts and constantly getting personal with users.

What I just stated above is something that almost all Arab users here agree with in particular our Egyptian brothers whom he is harassing and their country 24/7.

Time to grow up @Ceylal ! Now when Algeria (sadly) has failed to qualify for the World Cup 2018 in Russia next year, I expect you to be cheering for your Moroccan and Egyptian brothers today.

Yeah, he's just like a mosquito though. :-) More like annoying and peskily irritating than anything else. It does appear like the moderators are not tolerating this childish behavior anymore, which is a good thing since they obviously prefer adult behavior which leads to constructive and informative interaction rather than petty and insulting posts.

This story has been one of a few funny ones since it came out a while back. North Koreans operating an entire squadron of MiG-21's in Egypt and flying a pair on the first day of a surprise attack war? At the same time, Egypt launches over 200 MiG-21s and Su-22's but needed 2 North Korean MiGs to fly also? And one of them bails and the other decides to stay and fight 2 Israeli Phantoms? loooooool. Only an enthusiastic and imaginary mind can make up a fun story like this. :-)

Well, that is Ceylal for you once again. His "stories" are funny in small doses and occasionally (just for the laugh) but if it becomes a standard practice it tends to become highly annoying. Especially if such posts destroy entire informative threads.

Indeed. Hilarious stuff. Similarly to how he claimed in another thread on this section (not long ago) that only the Mayor of Moscow met with King Salman and the Saudi Arabian delegation despite a historic meeting. I mean come on! Anyway I won't mention him any longer as I wrote my post before he got banned once again. I still will claim that he is needed but he needs to change his behavior. This however is as likely as Algeria qualifying for next years World Cup in Russia. Sadly, non-existent.

As for North Korea, I was shocked to learn (not long ago) that KSA has economic ties with North Korea (albeit small) as well as countless of other nations, Western included. I knew about their friendship with Iran but that I did not know. Money, money, money.

L-O-L! He might as well have said it was the Moscow police chief and not the mayor and really gave us a worthy laugh.
