Great scope for economic cooperation between Pak, Ukraine

LAHORE, June 12 (APP): The Ukrainian Ambassador Igor Pasko has said that both Pakistan and Ukraine have very strong credentials to give new strengthens to their respective economies and lack of information about each other's potentials is coming in the way. He was speaking at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry on Tuesday. LCCI President Shahid Hassan Sheikh, Senior Vice President Yaqoob Tahir Izhar and Co-Chairman of LCCI Standing Committee on Diplomatic Missions Syed Mohammad Umair also spoke on the occasion.

The Ambassador stressed the need for people-to-people contact between the two countries to give boost to the existing level of two-way trade.


About direct flights between the two countries, the Ambassador said that modalities are being fianlised so that that the businessmen have an easy access to each other's market. He urged the Pakistani businessmen to come forward and avail the opportunities being offered by the Ukraine in the field of modern technology.


Speaking on the occasion, the LCCI President Shahid Hassan Sheikh said that Ukraine has a highly developed agriculture besides being a major centre of Ex-Soviet Union's heavy industry establishments. It has a proven metallurgy, electrical and mechanical engineering efficiency with vast natural and mineral resources.


Pakistan is predominantly an agrarian economy. It has a vibrant livestock sector and is the 5th largest producer of milk but it has not been able to fully exploit its strengths in the agriculture and livestock sector due to lack of technology that could give value addition to agricultural and dairy products and pave the way for the establishment of agro-based industries. He said Pakistan offers a lot of opportunities for Ukrainian businessmen to set up agro-based industries in Pakistan on 100% equity basis or in the form of joint ventures with Pakistani businessmen.


The LCCI President said hat Ukraine is a major center of Ex-Soviet Union's, heavy industry. This is another area where Pakistan can benefit from the processes and the consequent product development. Pakistani businessmen would specifically be looking for the prospects of transfer of technology. Opportunities exist in cooperation between the heavy industry establishments in Ukraine and the engineering sector of Pakistan in the form of joint ventures.
