ECNEC okays CHT development project

DHAKA, Oct 16 (BSS) - The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved a Taka 320 crore project aiming to develop socio-economic condition of the people of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT).

The approval was given at a meeting held in the NEC conference room in city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar today with Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

The project titled "Integrated community development in Chittagong Hill Tracts area" has been proposed as the 3rd phase project in the light of knowledge and experience of two previously completed projects in the hill tracts region. Planning Division Acting Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam briefed reporters after the meeting.

He said that the ECNEC approved a total of 10 development projects including the hill tracts project with a total outlay of Taka 1,638 crore.

"Of the total cost, Taka 1,106 crore will come from the national exchequer and the remaining Taka 532 crore will come as project assistance," he said.

Under the hill tracts project, 160 thousand families will be given education, health and other services through 4 thousand "rural centers" along with constructing 5 hundred new ones.

One hundred 62 thousand children will have the opportunity to get admitted into primary schools after completing the pre-primary level. Two thousand water sources would be developed and repaired and 20 thousand sanitary latrines would be distributed among the beneficiaries.

Besides, children, young girls, newly married women, child bearing and lactating mothers will be given micronutrient supplementation to prevent anemia or iron deficiency. UNICEF will provide a grant of Taka 163 crore for the project.

Recommending the project, the Planning Commission said the project would contribute to continuing the present development trend of hill tracts region in education, health, nutrition and water & sanitation sectors. It would also create social equality through ensuring the aforesaid facilities among the distressed communities of deprived and backward hilly areas.

The ECNEC approved another project called "Construction of well field at Tetuljhara and Vakurta area of Savar Upazila" project with a view to enhancing the water supplying capacity of Dhaka WASA to meet the increasing demand of safe water in Dhaka metropolitan city.

On completion, the project would ensure supply 150 MLD water daily from its 46 wells through Gabtali and Mirpur points. The project cost stands at Taka 521 crore including a credit of Taka 369 crore from the Korean government.

The other projects approved in the meeting are: "Extension of Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialized Hospital project' (Taka 58 crore-GoB); National livestook and poultry management institute and disease diagnosis laboratory establishment project (Taka 28 crore-GoB); Development and expansion of fish cultivation in Chittagong hill tracts region (Taka 68 crore-GoB); Protection of Alatuli area of Chapainawabganj district from the Padma river erosion project" (Taka 166 crore- GoB); Protection of Bhurungamari-Madargonj road from Dudhkumar river erosion near Shonahat bridge under Bhurungamari Upazila of Kurigram district and protection of the left bank of Teesta river covering the area from Gunaigach to Bazra Senior Madrasa of Ulipur Upazila project (Taka 42 crore-GoB); Strengthening Phitosanitary capacity in Bangladesh project" (Taka 139 crore-GoB); Chatmohar - Handial- Humkuria road construction (revised) project" (Taka 96 crore-GoB) and "Development of different roads & infrastructure facilities in Khulna City Corporation project" (Taka 200 crore-GoB).

Ministers, Advisers to the Prime Minister, Members of the Planning Commission, Secretaries and officials concerned were present in the meeting.
