~Pakistan: A Peoples History~
Part I: Early human Riwat culture
The Indus Valley has witnessed human activity for over 2000 Millennia. Early human hominini began migrating out of Africa approximately 2 million years towards many parts of Asia and Europe.
Among one of these sites is Riwat in upper Punjab. Discovered in 1983, this old Stone Age site provides evidence of early human occupation that is among the oldest outside Africa, dating to 1.9 million years ago.
The site consists of artifacts of flake tools and cores made of quartzite. A flake tool is a type of stone tool that was created by striking a stone core, in the hopes that a sharp piece breaks off. That sharp piece is called a flake and was used presumably as a cutting tool.
The early humans that settled in Riwat moved from a scavenging nomadic lifestyle to a hunting-gathering lifestyle that would remain dominant throughout the Paleolithic (stone age) and eventually give rise to the Soanian culture.
