Philippines' Duterte says would seek multilateral S. China Sea talks

May 9 Rodrigo Duterte said on Monday that if he became Philippine president he would call for multilateral talks to resolve disputes over the South China Sea, which should include the United States and Japan as well as rival claimants.

Duterte also said China should respect the Philippines' exclusive economic zone in the waters off its coast and, instead of facing off, the two countries could work together in exploiting offshore oil and gas as joint-venture partners.

"If we want joint ventures, fine. I believe in sharing," he told reporters in the southern city of Davao.

He was speaking while an unofficial vote count rolled in on the presidential election that showed him with a commanding lead over his rivals. (Reporting by Neil Jerome Morales; Writing by Martin Petty; Editing by John Chalmers)

You want some aloe vera for that burn? :coffee:

How can there be a middle ground? Sovereignty is different than anything else? Politicians just talk.

Depends. Philippines is claiming EEZ that extend to the control of the reefs & islands, while China is claiming reefs and island without declaring an EEZ, so at least the two has very different emphasis.

that's countless?? :undecided: countless would be the rape of nanking, the rape of germans by russians.

clearly you think this is only a U.S phenomenon.

i bet Chinese didn't do atrocities to civilians during the warring states period. or atrocities against Tibetians.

but i'm not going to continue on this subject since I'll be the one banned for obvious reasons.

war is professional and these things only happen when a yankee is involved.
There are a lot of undocumented crimes committed by US servicemen that don't get report by the media either through US bribery, victim fear of consequence, or downright upper level involvement seeking to stomp every negative report of US mistreatment of native population. You are talking about 10% of case that get report.

Very similar to the rape of the native Americans.

conquest is conquest. not saying anyone is morally superior than the other.

it's human nature to rape and pillage.

So much of your lies. It is American cheering on Pinoy with empty promise to ask them to step on China. Scarborough shoal used to be a fishing area used by Chinese and Pinoy fisherman. Then the Aquaino on American advise decide to chase Chinese fisherman out. Chinese has the right to defend our interest and we react by chasing all Pinoy fisherman out from there.

Pinoy with no big and modern coast guard end up the losing end when cheap and poor American did not back their Pinoy allies. :D

With the benefit of hindsight, what Aquino did now looks very stupid indeed.

Especially, when Taiwan has now thrown the status of Taiping Island into the mix.

China must follow arbitration ruling, Duterte says

DAVAO CITY – China must follow a United Nations-backed arbitration tribunal’s ruling on the Philippines’ petition to nullify its vast claims on the South China Sea, incoming president Rodrigo Duterte said Saturday.

The arbitral tribunal is expected to hand out is ruling on the potential flash point region this year. China has built massive structures on reefs and outcrops to reinforce its claim while the United States has sent air and naval patrols to ensure freedom of navigation.

Duterte said China must abide by the decision even as his government sought to partner with the superpower for sorely-needed infrastructure projects.

"If there’s an arbitration, we expect China will follow," the 71-year-old maverick mayor told reporters.

"Just because you’re building me the railway, doesn’t mean I am abandoning Scarborough Shoal," he said, referring to a Philippine-claimed outcrop that China has held since 2012, following a tense naval standoff.

Duterte earlier said he would ride a jet ski to plant the Philippine flag on a Chinese-held reef in the disputed Spratlys even if it would cost him his life.

"I told you, that is ours, you have no right to be there," he said on Saturday.
