Strategically speaking, Japan and South Korea are more valuable than the Philippines islands to US. Maybe this is what Duterte really want, that he knows his island country is no longer the strategic value it was during the Cold War and now, since he knows China cannot use the Philippines, might as well eject both from his country's politics.

China throughout its history have influenced Korea and Japan. under Chinese influence there were peace throughout the region. when Japan got too aggressive Korea ask China for help and Japan was defeated every single time and retreated
