Duterte congratulates Trump, wishes ‘enhanced PH-US relations’

President Rodrigo Duterte said United States President-elect Donald Trump is supporting his brutal war on illegal drugs.

Duterte and Trump had an “engaging” phone conversation on Friday night.

“The President-elect Trump wishes to extend his warmest regards to the Filipino people. And in just a few minutes, we were talking [about] a lot of things. He was quite sensitive also to our worry about drugs,” Duterte said of their conversation.

The 71-year-old chief executive said “he could sense a good rapport” with Trump.

“I could sense a good rapport, an animated President-elect Trump. And he was wishing me success in my campaign against the drug problem,” he said.

“He understood the way we are handling it and I said that there’s nothing wrong in protecting a country. It was a bit very encouraging in the sense that I supposed that what he really wanted to say was that we would be the last to interfere in the affairs of your own country,” he added.

Duterte’s no-nonsense crackdown on illegal drugs has received criticisms from US President Barack Obama. This did not sit well with Duterte and has repeatedly slammed Obama for interfering in our domestic affairs.

But with the incoming Trump presidency, Duterte assured stronger ties with America. He said Trump wishes him well in his war on drugs.

“And he wishes me well too, in my campaign and he said that… well we are doing it as a sovereign nation, the right way. And he wishes us well. And I said that, well, we assured him of our ties with America,” he said.

Duterte said Trump would be a good President for the US.

“I appreciate the response that I got from President-elect Trump and I would like to wish him success. He will be a good president for the United States of America. I am very sure,” he said.

He said Trump invited him to visit the White House in 2017.

“And he has invited me to visit New York and Washington DC, he said that if I’m around, he wants to be notified of my presence and maybe…,” he said.

In return, Duterte also invited Trump to attend the 2017 Asean Summit in the Philippines.

“And I mentioned to him about the ASEAN Summit next year and he said that he will try his best to be here. He wants to attend the Summit and that would be great for our country,” he said. CDG

Donald Trump invited Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte to the White House in 2017 during a telephone conversation, according to an aide to Duterte.

Reuters reported on Friday that the conversation between the two had been described by Duterte aide Christopher Go as a “very engaging, animated” one, lasting more than seven minutes. Some have drawn similarities between the two leaders based on their unexpected rises to power and their controversial statements and provocative personalities. Immediately after the U.S. election last month, Duterte extended an olive branch to Trump, despite fractious relations between the two countries since the Philippine President’s election in May this year.

Duterte also invited Trump to the Philippines next year when the country chairs the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), Go said. It is tradition for the U.S. president to attend the proceedings. At the summit in October, Duterte called President Obama the “son of a whore.”

I think Trump prefers to spend the money more wisely, America first was it not? He did say US infrastructure is like a third world country and he promised to increase jobs so i don't think he's gonna spend that kind of money on Pinoys.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said Wednesday he felt "like a saint" after his phone conversation last week with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who he said praised him for "doing great" in his deadly campaign against illegal drugs.

He said in a speech that Trump told him not to worry about Americans criticizing him, saying "you are doing good, go ahead."

Trump invited him for coffee if he visits Washington or New York, and told him he wanted to hear how Duterte deals with the media, his critics and the public, the Philippine president said.

"'Oh President Duterte, we should fix our bad relations ... you're doing great," he quoted Trump as saying. "So now, if you listen to Trump talk to me, I have become like a saint."

Duterte called to congratulate Trump late Friday.

In earlier comments about the phone call, Duterte said Trump wished that his crackdown on illegal drugs would succeed, and said he assured the U.S. president-elect the Philippines would maintain its ties with America — a departure from Duterte's hostility toward the Obama administration.

Duterte has lashed out at President Barack Obama, the State Department, EU and U.N. officials, and human rights groups for raising concerns over his drug crackdown, which has left more than 4,000 suspected drug dealers and users dead.

Obama canceled what could have been his first formal meeting with Duterte at an Asian summit in Laos in September after Duterte unleashed an expletive-laden warning for the U.S. leader not to lecture him on human rights. In one speech, Duterte told Obama to "go to hell."
