UMTAS on target

By: David DonaldPublished: 13 Sep 2013Turkish missile and rocket house Roketsan (Stand N9-210) is gearing up for production of its L-UMTAS and UMTAS long-range anti-tank missiles. The laser-guided L-UMTAS (also known as L-TAM-LR) is scheduled to start production before the end of the year, while the imaging infrared-guided UMTAS will follow early next year. Both variants of the missile will form the primary antitank armament of the T-129 Atak attack helicopter (based on the AgustaWestland A129 Mangusta) that is being procured for the Turkish army, but the weapons are applicable to many platforms, including land vehicles, fixed platforms and naval vessels. The mock-ups of the missiles on show here at DSEI are mounted on a standard four-round missile launcher from an AH-1W Cobra, which is the Turkish army’s current attack helicopter. Also on display attached to the launcher is a tworound pod for Roketsan’s Cirit laser-guided rocket. Like the UMTAS family, Cirit offers an 8km range. Rather than being a repackaged legacy 70mm rocket, the Cirit is an all-new weapon, with new warhead and motor, plus a laser guidance seeker. A key element is UTC Aerospace Systems’ SiIMU02 inertial measurement unit, which allows the Cirit to be launched against co-ordinates prior to receiving laser designation update targeting.
