DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon speaks at a press conference at Nagar Bhaban, Dhaka on Wednesday Dhaka Tribune

He also said six companies will be in charge of running the 22 bus routes in the city

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon said bus route rationalization will be completed by December 2020 as all the buses hitting the streets to ply 22 routes will be brought under six companies.

The pledges came in a press briefing at the Nagar Bhaban, after he sat with the stakeholders of the public transport sector on Wednesday afternoon.

He also said that the circular bus service will be launched in the Motijheel area by the end of April, and in Uttara, early next month.

A feasibility study on the Gulistan-Jatrabari route via Sadarghat for the circular bus service will be completed very soon, the mayor furthered.

“Since 2020 is going to be marked as Mujib Year – on the occasion of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s 100th birth anniversary – we planned to pay our profound tribute to the great leader by bringing discipline on the roads,” Khokon said.

He went on to say the bus companies will be allowed to run their buses in the six colours: pink, orange, green, violet, maroon, and blue.

Wednesday’s meeting was the sixth, ever since a committee on ensuring road safety and restoring discipline was formed with Mayor Khokon working as its convener. The other members include his Dhaka north city counterpart, Md Atiqul Islam.

In the fifth meeting of the committee held on April 3, the DSCC mayor had said some 4,500 new buses—half of which will be air conditioned—will be introduced in the capital, whereas, all old buses will be removed.

Abul Kalam Azad, principal coordinator of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Affairs at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) Chairman Farid Ahmed Bhuiyan and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Md Moshiar Rahman, were present at the meeting.

The Dhaka north and south city corporations launched the circular service on March 27 on two routes. As per the plan, four AC buses are plying the between Dhanmondi and Azimpur, and four double-deckers are hitting the second (Abdullahpur-Motijheel) route.

This is long overdue. It will be the first step to put some civility in the public transport in Dhaka. Currently over 500 private bus company operating in the city by creating hundreds of bus routes. Engaged in a unhealthy competition with their run down, rustbucket buses. Such madness need to end as early as possible.

But, have the City govts. finalized the 22 routes whereby the buses of different companies do not run amock to catch passengers on the same routes causing accidents?

This was meant to be established in/by 2020. It is mid-2022 now. Shouldn't they already?

I do not think it has happened (the 22 routes). I have not read anything about it after the govt people made big promises. Our BD people promise something in the morning and forget those before it is evening.

Govt people lack self-discipline, institutions, systems, and the knowledge of "How to Plan". So, usually, they promise and then forget. Without forming proper institutions, some of them would come individually and talk in their own ways to appease people.

I was under the impression that Bd could not truly prosper while being under the two kitty admins alternating power. But now it sounds like one-sided corruption, mismanagement & lack of knowledge...

Technocrats must be installed at the top echelon of the govt. However, I wonder if even they can reverse/ revise the situation. For example Dr. Yunus. He may earn many votes but his experience is limited to business within BD.

Dr. Reza. He earned experience while working in the IMF. But, while I watch him talking I do not find in him something needed to go uphill. The country needs visionary leaders who would make changes in the administration of the entire country.

And one or two men are not enough. Millions of people at the top bureaucracy are needed under a competent political govt to change the situation.

In the context of BD, only military officers are competent in administration. But, they also lose steam and become corrupt.

We need our father of nation version 2.0 with a trusted, elite group of ministers backed exclusively by the army & intelligence. Bangladesh requires an anti-corruption revolution/coup from within.

Do not please expect such a change without a revolution by whom I just do not know. Our people kept on going to Madrassahs during the long 190 years of British rule. And our forefathers lost the opportunity to learn from the then British education system the subjects needed to develop the society and the country.

This generation is following the same method of learning nothing. A tree cannot bear fruits unless it can blossom flowers. BD society is exactly like this.

Education was completely secular in nature before 1971. I don't know why again it is Madrassah-oriented.

It's a waiting game for the appearance of a generation of prodigies, in other words...a miracle

Stop dreaming of miracles!

Get off your backside and contribute.

Best way to contribute is to get educated - from an elite university. If you cannot get admitted to an elite uni - get technical training instead of worthless degrees from one of the chetona universities.

Then get a job in one of the FANGS or at least second tier companies.

Us Bangladeshis are outnumbered in those top companies. We need to up our numbers to have any influence.
