DRDO to Launch Over 70 Products in DefExpo-2012

DRDO will launch over 70 products, which can be used for civilian purposes, in the four-day DefExpo-2012, besides showcasing its arsenal of indigenously developed arms and ammunition.

While some of its well known missile systems, UAVs and soldier support systems will be displayed as usual, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will also launch products for civilian applications like swine flu and explosive detection kits.

"The Explosive Detection Kit, and Swine Flu diagnostic kit are among over 70 products and technologies developed for defence applications with potential civilian applications that have been identified for commercialisation by the DRDO," Defence Ministry officials said here today.

The seventh edition of DefExpo will be inaugurated here by Defence Minister A K Antony tomorrow.

These products have been developed under the Accelerated Technology Assessment Commercialisation (ATAC) program in which defence technology is used by the DRDO to develop products which can be useful for civilians.

The Explosive Detection Kit (EDK), developed by Pune- based High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, can quickly detect and identify even traces of explosives. The kit is ideally suited to be carried and used everywhere, they said.

The swine flu diagnostic kit has been developed by Gwalior-based Defence Research and Development Establishment, (DRDE) and it can detect H1N1 virus within 60 minutes.

"The kit does not need sophisticated instruments and can even be used in villages where electricity is not available," the officials said.

During the exhibition, DRDO will also provide a platform to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to identify areas for collaboration in jointly developing its technologies.

In the arms and ammunition section, the defence agency will exhibit Missile Interceptor Simulator and a 3D-Virtual Reality Theatre and a number of autonomous and unmanned vehicles.

Besides the Unmanned Tracked Ground Vehicle and Remotely Operated Vehicle, DRDO will also showcase UAVs Nishant, Rustom and Netra, and Light Weight Sensor Integrated Composite Bridge.

In the radar and electronic warfare systems category, it will bring out its Long Range Solid State Electronically Scanned Active Phased Array Radar LSTAR, Disha EW system and Scorpio Jammer.

Heavy weight torpedo Varunastra, Pinaka multi-barrel rocket system, Prahar tactical range ballistic missile system and Arjun main battle tank will also be some of the major attractions.

The indoor exhibits include models of various missiles and electronic systems such as Nag, Akash, BrahMos, Aerostat System, AEW&C System, BMP Survival Kit (BUSK).

Navaratna Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) will showcase its R&D might at ‘Defexpo India 2012', the land, naval and internal security systems exhibition, which will be held in New Delhi from March 29 to April 1.

It will display its latest range of products and systems developed in-house.

A release from BEL stated that the highlight of its display will be the Network Centric Warfare (NCW) systems developed indigenously for the Indian defence forces.

This includes Combat Management System, which automates tactical data from the ship's sensors to provide decision support to the ship's command; Coastal Surveillance System, an all-weather 24X7 surveillance system developed to safeguard the nation's coastline by networking various sensors such as radars, day-and-night electro-optical equipment; Automatic Identification System and meteorological equipment; and Advanced Composite Communication System, an IP-based New-Generation voice, data and video integrated system.

BEL's display will also include key elements developed for use in various C4I systems.

SELEX Galileo will also be celebrating the success of their Mirach 100/5 aerial target drone, which is currently under order by the DRDO following many years of successful operations at their integrated test range at Chandipur. SELEX Galileo has over 60 years of experience in the design, manufacture and support of unmanned aerial systems worldwide and at DEFEXPO will be promoting its portfolio of mini and micro UAS. This will include the Crex B, designed for Special Operational and Tactical Forces’ intelligence missions, and the quadrotor DRAKO.

Also on show will be SELEX Galileo’s latest Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) systems, such as the Seaspray family of surveillance radars which have been selected by customers in the US, UK and by several others internationally. The Company will also be displaying their PicoSAR Synthetic Aperture Radar which brings a compact and light-weight AESA solution, suitable for ground-surveillance roles on UAVs and light helicopters.

SELEX Galileo will also be displaying elements of their Airborne Tactical Observation and Surveillance (ATOS) avionic suite, a system which has also been sold to a number of domestic and international customers. ATOS, effectively mated with our Seaspray radar technology, is currently focused on a number of Indian fixed-wing and rotary-wing competitions.

A range of modern Electro-Optic (EO) cameras and fire control systems will also be on display.

Selex Galileo is a key partner in the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter program. • MIRACH. The Mirach 100/5 is a high performance, reusable Aerial Target System which is the standard European Armed Forces threat simulator.

• MINI UAS. SELEX Galileo's portfolio of mini and micro UAS includes DRAKO, an electrical quad-rotor system capable of autonomous and semi-autonomous flight, and Crex B, specifically designed for Special Operational and Tactical Forces for "over the hill" and "around the corner" intelligence missions.

• ATOS. ATOS provides wide area and targeted surveillance (overt or covert), anti-submarine warfare, environmental and border control. It is an advanced, flexible, mission management system integrating a number of sensors and sub-systems in a highly modular design. Road Marshall. An integrated military vehicle situation awareness system that combines optical and acoustic technologies from three sub-systems into one fully integrated solution, providing the user with an enhanced capability and simplified Man Machine Interface (MMI). • STAWS. Surveillance Target Acquisition and Weapon Aiming Sight (STAWS) provides a 24-hour all-weather surveillance and target acquisition capability.

• SEER. The next generation RWR, SEER uses digital receiver technology. It is essential for evading threats, increasing aircraft survivability and improving the probability of mission success.

• SAGE. SAGE has been developed to combat modern RF complexities, providing ESM capability applicable for immediate and foreseeable future operational environments. SAGE provides intelligence gathering and geo-location of RF assets.

• SIREN. The SIREN naval off-board Active Radar Decoy is used to defeat a missile in the final stages of its attack even after its radar seeker head has locked onto the target ship. HIDAS. The Helicopter Integrated Defensive Aids System (HIDAS) uses multi-spectral sensors and pre-loaded intelligence to produce comprehensive tactical pictures of the operational environment. HIDAS rapidly identifies hostile systems and initiates appropriate countermeasures.

• SEASPRAY 5000E. At less than 45kg, Seaspray 5000E is the smallest of the Seaspray radar systems. It is the ‘entry-level’ standard of multi-mode surveillance radar and is appropriate for light naval helicopters and twin turbo-prop surveillance aircraft. Seaspray 7000E. At less than 80kg, Seaspray 7000E is the mid range Seaspray radar system. It is appropriate to medium naval helicopters and Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA).

etremely good job DRDO hope that our defence Industry will get completely autonomous within a decade.

I think "might" is an overstatement.

DRDO has allot of work to do. Being able to meet military requirements, and actually deliver a fully functioning platform in a timely and cost effective manner would be a good start. I don't want to bash them too hard, but the DRDO has let down the military in the past. It needs to be reformed.

It would also help if products could be produced by the private sector and not just OFB most of the time. OFB is very inefficient and has obsolete facilities almost across the board.

go DRDO,make every one proud and a kick in the rear to all those fools criticising this highly talented andb technologically advanced organization(without realising the fund allocated to it by GOI,the corrupt officials hellbent on importing foreign systems as being exposed by the army chief).there should be no doubt about the talent & quality of the scientist which are better the the ones sitting inside the defence labs in USA and other NATO nations
