DRDO’s state-of-the-art light weight bulletproof jackets for armed forces personnel for the first time has met most of the stringent requirements set by Indian Army under its General Staff Qualitative Requirements (GSQRs) 1438 has successfully qualified and is under production at ordnance factory in Kanpur and will be delivered to Indian Army in next few months. DRDO’s Bullet Proof Jacket (BPJ) is modular in design and consists of three parts: Soft Armour Panels (SAPs), Hard Armour Panels (HAPs) and carrier to accommodate SAPs and HAPs. Soft Armour Panels provides protection against 9 mm carbine from a distance of 05 meter Hard Armour Panels (HAPs) provides protection against 7.62 SLR, AK-47 (MSC) bullets from a 10-meter distance while the Front HAP also provides protection against 7.62 SLR, AK-47 (MSC & VHSC) bullets. DRDO’s Bullet Proof Jacket (BPJ) comes in three sizes Small, Medium and Large and all three Sizes have cleared final Army trials at Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, Chandigarh.Indian Army desperately needs nearly two lakh bulletproof jackets to plug a basic necessity for the soldiers who guard our borders and fight terrorists. MKU and Tata Advanced Materials along with Star Wire India (Ltd) have also developed Bullet Proof Jackets which are exported to armed forces around the world and also used by Law enforcement agencies in developed countries but Bullet Proof Jackets developed by them did not meet the standards laid down by the Army in trials.

A bullet-proof jacket designed by Bengali scientist Professor Shantanu Bhowmick has finally received the government's approval.

The empowered committee of the Ministry of Defence approved the jacket, which is made from indigenous ultra modern lightweight thermoplastic technology. It will be included in the Prime Minister's 'Make in India' project. The task of manufacturing the jackets will begin after the PMO gives it the green-light.

A joint collaboration between the DRDO and defence ministry, this is the first time in 70 years that the Indian Army will have bullet-proof jacket manufactured completely through indigenous technology.

Currently, India spends Rs 1.5 lakh on a single jacket used by the military and para-military forces. These jackets are imported from America. Dr Bhowmick's jacket will cost only Rs 50,000 per jacket. That means India will save Rs 20,000 crores every year.

The present bullet proof jackets being used by our jawans in the Army, BSF, CRPF and Police are heavy, weighing anywhere between 15-18 kgs. These new light weight jackets weigh 6-8 times less at just 1.5 kg. It has 20 layers and the carbon fiber in it will enable the jacket to work in 57 degrees Celsius also.

Professor Shantanu Bhowmick is the departmental head of aerospace engineering in Coimbatore's Amrita University. He has high hopes for his new invention and expressed his happiness at getting the official nod for the project. He thanked former Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Subrata Saha, who had taken the initiative and encouraged Bhowmick. The professor dedicated his invention to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Actually we supply bullet proof jackets and helmets to them.

Your knowledge in inadequate and DRDO is far more competent that any similar pakistani agency.

.
Let's hope they get introduced to all services simultaneously. CRPF, MARCOs and SSBs also need these.

The regular BSF and infantry soldier desperately needs this.

Lol Mr
India is among the world leader in exporting & making quality bulletproof jackets & helmets.Exported to more than 50 countries.Just do some goggling.
It's our army who has demand of some alien level.

.
OMG, how IA approved this? Big Shock for me. Looking @ the requirements set by Army and Airforce for other various projects I was expecting they will not accept it until it passes test against 155 mm Howitzer Artillery Shell.
