DRDO’s state-of-the-art light weight bulletproof jackets for armed forces personnel for the first time has met most of the stringent requirements set by Indian Army under its General Staff Qualitative Requirements (GSQRs) 1438 has successfully qualified and is under production at ordnance factory in Kanpur and will be delivered to Indian Army in next few months. DRDO’s Bullet Proof Jacket (BPJ) is modular in design and consists of three parts: Soft Armour Panels (SAPs), Hard Armour Panels (HAPs) and carrier to accommodate SAPs and HAPs. Soft Armour Panels provides protection against 9 mm carbine from a distance of 05 meter Hard Armour Panels (HAPs) provides protection against 7.62 SLR, AK-47 (MSC) bullets from a 10-meter distance while the Front HAP also provides protection against 7.62 SLR, AK-47 (MSC & VHSC) bullets. DRDO’s Bullet Proof Jacket (BPJ) comes in three sizes Small, Medium and Large and all three Sizes have cleared final Army trials at Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, Chandigarh.Indian Army desperately needs nearly two lakh bulletproof jackets to plug a basic necessity for the soldiers who guard our borders and fight terrorists. MKU and Tata Advanced Materials along with Star Wire India (Ltd) have also developed Bullet Proof Jackets which are exported to armed forces around the world and also used by Law enforcement agencies in developed countries but Bullet Proof Jackets developed by them did not meet the standards laid down by the Army in trials.
