Military technologies the world over tend to give us commercial applications we never imagine to be related to the military.

Not many people know that there is a seperate department in DRDO researching a lot of applications to make day to day life of a soldier easier. This tends to spin off into products with commercial applications which the DRDO sells in a technology transfer to private sectors.
If anyone had heard about Seabuckthorn fruit, the DRDO made a patented drink out of it as an energizer for soldiers. It's the same fruit that the Chinese give their Olympic athletes. This was eventually sold by Kingfisher Airlines as King Buckthorn juice.

As far as the skin cream is concerned, the DRDO was researching skin cream to prevent damage to soldiers in desert environment and high altitude regions like Siachen. This is most likely a spin off of that research.

Leucoderma is a disease and one of DRDO's many labs developed a medicine for it but idiot like you do not understand that. For you every cream is like fair and lovely.

If suman sharma had capacity to understand this than she would have capability to differentiate between mig-29 and f-15 lol.

Parliament press release....

Herbal Care Product for Leucoderma Launched by DRDO
Press Information Bureau English Releases

Lukoskin, a herbal product for Leucoderma developed by DRDO, was launched by Dr. W. Selvamurthy, Distinguished Scientist & Chief Controller Research & Development (Life Science & International Cooperation) in New Delhi, yesterday. The product will be a boon for the patients of Leucoderma and is backed by extensive R&D work by the scientists of Defence Institute of Bio-energy Research (DIBER) (formerly Defence Agricultural Research Laboratory), Haldwani. DIBER, a DRDO laboratory has carried out extensive work in the area of medicinal plant and is also engaged in R&D in generating bio-energy solutions for energy security. The product, Lukoskin, was developed under the leadership of Dr Narender Kumar, Ex Director DARL and his team. Special efforts in the development of this herbal product were made by Dr. P.S. Rawat, ex Head, Herbal Medicine Division and Dr. H.K. Pandey, Scientist presently heading Phyto-Chemistry Division at Pithoragarh. The herbal product will be available in the form of ointment and oral liquid. Dr. Zakwan Ahmed, Director – DIBER, Haldwani and Dr G Ilavazhagan, Director – Life Sciences have pursued the case to bring the product into the market and render much needed service to mankind. This herbal product would be a new hope and boon to the vitiligo affected person. Under the leadership and guidance of Dr. W. Selvamurthy, the ‘Transfer of Technology’ has been granted to the AIMIL Pharmaceuticals (India) Ltd., New Delhi to manufacture and market this research product based on their technological and marketing credentials.

Leucoderma or vitiligo is an idiopathic acquired disorder of skin. Patients with vitiligo develop white spots in the skin with varying size and location. The world wide incidence of leucoderma has been reported 1-2%. In India, its incidence is around 4-5% in some parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat it is very high more than 5-8%. This skin disorder is considered as social stigma in our country and people confuse it with leprosy. The affected individuals are always remain in constant depression with the feeling of being socially outcast. There are many existing remedies of this disorder viz., allopathic, surgical and adjunctive. None of the therapies has satisfactorily cure of this disease. Secondly, these are either costly or single component based, with very low level of efficacy and develop blister, edema, irritation in the skin with the result most of the patients discontinue the treatment. The scientists of DIBER (DRDO) have therefore focused on the causes of disease (aetiology) and researched out a comprehensive formulation for the management of leucoderma from Himalayan herbs by exhaustive scientific studies led to the establishment of the safety and efficiency of the product which extends the benefits on all fronts with very good efficiency. Clinically, the product is quite effective and helps not only in restoring the normal complexion in the affected area but also relieves the affected ones from mental stress, emotional and psychological trauma and thereby, enhancing the confidence and efficiency.

The product was launched by Dr. W Selvamurthy in the presence of Dr. Narender Kumar, Dr. Zakwan Ahmed, Dr. G Ilavazhagan, Mr. KK Sharma, Managing Director, AIMIL Pharmaceuticals and senior officials of DRDO and AIMIL Pharmaceuticals.

i want a new extra special toilet cleaner.

i hope they can invent that too.

Reporting the post. toilet cleaner is required, specially for fakes.

soldiers have to be disease free...but question is that if it is really a defense related product? cant DRDO open another branch with some other name for developing these medicines?

In my perspective better v can stop funding for DRDO life science branch even if u closed that is too smart . Better invest in other institutes.

What do you expect Defence Institute of Bio-energy Research (DIBER) (formerly Defence Agricultural Research Laboratory), Haldwani to develop? These bio technology branches of DRDO develop such medicine and transfer the technologies to private industry.

It is also important like developing Agni missiles.

What diff would that make ? The funding would still come from the same source.

Is the grouse that DRDO is doing ' non military' things ?

They have a very large pool of scientists for various applications in diverse fields.

title is very misleading...it should be DIBER invents skin cream..

They are simply wasting our money . Those pool of scientists are foolS simply u can say.

I'll bet that if you were suffering from Leucoderma you wouldn't be singing the same tune.

Hahaaaa leucoderma is caused absence of melanin pigment , this is genetic loss or auto immunity so it can't be reparable means some region in the area(melanin coding gene) is splice out or truncated. so only molecular therapy is only way to those disease even that also in infant stage. did u think thalassemia can be treated by herbal? the same phenomena is applicable in this case . In my view those herbal may give black or brown shade (even by overdose) therby u conceal the white patches just like whites having some black or brown dots or brown shade after sunbath .so bottom line they are cheating fine.

Thank god you are talking about cheating. But biological technology development is important along with medicines for protection against biological weapons. DRDO develops technology for all kind of threats.

I know a woman was suffering from Leucoderma disease and it is curable. DRDO was the first in country to quickly develop a cost effective way of detecting and treatment of H5N1 after its outbreak.

title is very misleading...it should be DIBER invents skin cream..

It should be 'DRDO developed new treatment for Leucoderma' but suman sharma and some here are too frustrated to understand the substance.

So what exactly is your objection based on?The DRDO trying to offer a herbal solution to people who can't afford expensive treatment or have allergies to undergo the same? Leucoderma causes severe itches and hypersensitivity of the skin to the sun as well.Folks shouldn't get a herbal cream for it for cheap?

You can come talk when you come up with an alternative.

when will it enter mass production?

dont delay this man.

how much was the development cost and how many decades it took to develop?
