Daksh now detects radiation levels to tackle nuclear, biological, chemical warfare

In order to tackle nuclear, biological or chemical (NBC) warfare in the country, a group of scientists from the Pune-based Defence Research and Development Organisation's (DRDO) laboratory Research and Development Establishment, Engineers (R &DE (E)) has modified a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) called Daksh with NBC detection sensors, which can now detect radiation levels.

Daksh can handle and clear improvised explosives devices (IEDs) and other hazardous objects. The Indian Army has already inducted Daksh into its arsenal. Speaking to Mirror, Dr S Guruprasad, director (R and DE (E)), said, "We have made crucial changes to Daksh, which include an NBC detection sensor for detecting the exact level of radiation." He added, "We are yet to conduct technical trials on the new ROV, which will be done over a year."

The ROV is capable of climbing stairs as well as negotiating crosscountry terrain and has an onboard shotgun for blasting through door locks and breaking windshields to handle car bombs.

Sources at DRDO told Mirror, "ROV is a compact robot on wheels which has a manipulator arm with six joints that can be extended to remotely extract IEDs, in addition to detachable X-ray equipment that can be used to confirm the presence of explosives. The ROV can travel 500 metres from the master control station and is adept at cross-country situations as well. The operator in the vehicle has access to a portable, X-ray system, which allows him to see the insides of a bag. If a bomb is detected, the water jet disrupter can be activa-ted to diffuse it immediately."

Army officers are of the opinion that enhanced preparation for NBC warfare is the need of the hour. "NBC training is absolutely essential considering the challenges ahead. We even have special NBC suits to wear during commando training. The ROV is a good development for the army," an army source told Mirror.

DRDO scientists claim that the ROV will also be crucial for paramilitary forces such as the Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Sources at NDRF said, "In 2000, at Delhi's Mayapuri scrap yard, eight people suffered after exposure to radioactive material. We cannot ignore such incidents. Considering all these aspects, Daksh will play a pivotal role."

About time we have such remotely operated devices.
There are threats of terrorists using dirty bombs laced with Radio-active material and such weapons can contaminate a large area creating a nightmare for Disaster management agencies conducting De-contamination. So devices like these are a must in changed security scenario.

In order to tackle insurgency and terror threats, particularly in the Northeast, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) is in the process of procuring sophisticated equipment like Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Daksha and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Netra for its operational preparedness.

The ROV Daksha has already been inducted into the Indian Army and is used for detection and disposal of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), while the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been utilising UAV Netra for aerial surveillance during natural disasters.
