New Delhi: Six months after coming to power, the NDA government today named National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval as its Special Representative on boundary talks with China, paving the way for the dialogue to resume at this level.

Doval “has been appointed as the Special Representative of India to conduct boundary negotiations and strategic consultations with China,” a PMO statement said. “This arrangement will be part of NSA’s overall assignment,” it added.

NSA, with the rank of Minister of State, has generally been the Special Representative on boundary talks with China. However, Doval had so far not been nominated as the Special Representative even though he had been appointed as NSA in May.

The Chinese side is also represented by a Vice Minister-level official.

India and China had established in 2003 the mechanism of Special Representatives to thrash out a resolution to the vexed boundary question. The two sides have so far held 17 rounds of talks, making some progress.

The last round was held in February in Delhi between the then NSA Shivshankar Menon and Chinese State Councillor Yang Jiechi.

Doval will be wasting his time - the border discussions have been happening from ages, i think 19 such meetings have happened till date, better to appoint another executive to take care of these meetings and he concentrate on something meaningful.

What if he gives them an offer they cannot refuse?

By the looks of it, the chinese have an agenda, they prefer to keep the pot boiling till one is exasperated enough to bend to their stand. We are playing along, no point wasting time on these meetings, leave them to some lower level executive to handle.

Or send someone high to whisper a final statement. :D Doval is a devil, if he is going, he does have a devilish plan for sure. :P

Let him try.. its not good to have such a resource in our side and not using them to solve the problem thinking Chinese wouldn't want to solve. its in our best interest to solve the border issue with Chinese. Atleast our best guy is taking straight on Chinese unlike our neighbor who love to visit UN and US.

This man is a genius..works silently...he should be engaged with this kind of activity..would be good.

It is true that the border talk are likely to fail.

Because China is in no mood to settle border issue . Given overall trajectory of China's policy vis a vis India - it is clear that it is in mood to increase pressure on India by escalating Border issue .

however it is ok to put our best foot forward .

Understanding China's game plan is key to our overall security policy .

It is best therefore to have NSA like Doval to lead our talks with China .

Even if talks fail we need to have insight into China's intentions .

It is a step in right direction .

Lets wait for the outcome.

Diplomacy and negotiations are not one off incidents. It is often a long drawn process ...
and often so called ' failed ' talks play important role in shaping future framework .

It is important to stay engaged and understand which way wind is blowing .

Only when there is some scope for negotiations, we know their stand and their strategy, they probably know ours. the talks are just a waste of time while they will keep pricking us with incursions and involvement in our region.
