I am fairly good at Hindi.

Pretty isolated incidents like this are found wherever there are multiple languages in a country. I personally know of what much of the Hong Konger attitude was/is towards full Mandarin adoption for instance....but doesn't mean there is some massive sustained unbearable friction going on more generally (that only a few threads holding something together)....like some stronky feelz ppl in this thread already insinuating.

Well, come to think of it, one of my wife case here in Oz is that the Police arrested a person who don't speak English and about to deport her and she found legal representation at the last minute and save her from deportation. And turns out that she is actually a Permanent Resident in Oz. Immigration did that before, when a German show up in a police station speak nothing but German and was interned in Immigration Detention for 11 months, and turns out to be another PR. And then there is this Filipino Australian who were actually deported to Philippine.......

A mandarin speaker can quite easily understand a cantonese speaker convey and vice versa. And PRC custom officer never rejects a hongkonger or Chinese national who can't speak mandarin from leaving... While that can't be say for India.

You probably hasn't interacted with a person who speak Cantonese.

Cantonese is very hard to understand if you do not speak it, even if you do speak Mandarin, you probably can get 40-50% of what a Cantonese speaker said. The rest goes to slang (Cantonese made up of a large chunk of local slang) and the tone (Cantonese have 8 tones instead of 4)

When you go to a border post between China and Hong Kong, if the immigration officer cannot speak Cantonese (Which is very rare) he would just ask one that can speak to talk to you.

It's a failure of our people to not acknowledge the diversity and take initiative to learn other languages. But we are more interested in learning French and German instead of Tamil-Telugu by NI and Hindi-Urdu by South Indians. Anyway India is too big and diverse. You will have people complaining about my language not being spoken by others.

Best would be to keep mother tongue conversation within community. English conversation down south and Hindi-Urdu conversation up north.

Anyway these things happen everywhere. I have heard Brits complaining about South Asians not speaking English in public places.
