Don't demonize India on outsourcing: Republican McCain

Washington: A top Republican leader on Friday came out strongly against efforts to "demonise" India as a destination of shipping US jobs, and called for an end to such statements for political gains.

"We cannot allow our anxieties about globalisation to cause us to demonise India for crass political gain," top Republican Senator John McCain said in his remarks on Indo-US ties at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Outsourcing of jobs to India was one of the major election issues in the American mid-term elections held on Tuesday.

The Republican Party gained majority in the US House of Representatives as they defeated the Democratic Party of President Barack Obama, who during his entire electoral campaign, repeatedly spoke against shipping US jobs overseas - including India - and putting an end to tax breaks to such American companies.

Outsourcing is an inescapable feature of today's global economy, not an Indian plot to steal American jobs, and we should not condone any unfair punishments of Indian workers," McCain said in his remarks, thus asking political leaders not to demonise India for outsourcing.

"On the Indian side, relations with the US cannot remain a political club, which the party out of power uses to beat up the party in power for doing exactly what it would have done were it governing," he said.

"More leaders on both sides need to speak up for this partnership, and fight harder for it, and build the public support needed to sustain our strategic priorities. If not, our relationship will fall far short of its potential, as it has before," McCain said.

They need someone to blame for their own economic problems.

It is all about politics in USA. The Republicans will spare no effort to drive Obama and his policies in to a corner. And Mr. Obama will have to keep squirming all the while. Not unsurprisingly, Obama overlooks one fact; that India Inc. has taken over 350 odd businesses in the USA and in the process created over 65,000 jobs there.

It is all domestic US politics.

The term outsourcing has become a loose word and being used to gain political mileage in the US. In the recent mid-term elections the word 'outsourcing' was used plentifully to demonize candidates who were in some way supportive of outsourcing.

Outsourcing is a corporate decision and in a capitalist economy, the govt or any partisanship cannot be to blame. If the corporates are outsourcing, they are doing to to earn more money for their country, it is not like they are losing money. Looks like the Republicans are gearing up for the 2012 elections already.

Yeah, I saw that "Chinese professor" advert that is being shown in the US. The one that essentially portrays Chinese people as evil masterminds.

If they want a solution to their problems, they should stop blaming "foreigners" and start looking at themselves.

As you said, it's just politics.

You are heading in the right direction. 'Outsourcing' is purely an economic decision. Outsourcing has helped American businesses to remain competitive and profitable, that is the only reason why it is taking place. Not because 'Big' American business loves Indians. Profitable businesses are more likely to grow and generate employment.
So; while ruthlessly politicking, let the American politicos work out how really they can lift their economy out of the dumps.
Attacking outsourcing, IMO is only meaningless symbolism.

The only culprits for the whole outsourcing are the money hungry Wall Street gamblers. They are the ones who get exited and start investing in the companies who are pro-outsourcing believing that they will give them the maximum returns. The politicians need to open their eyes and see what is the reason behind outsourcing... misleading the public wont do any good except for playing partisan politics.

That Ad was so cheap, like a highly dramatized bond movie. American campaign ads are surprisingly shallow and more emotional than factual.
People who buy that must be really dumb.

actually no, It quite bluntly stated that the cause of the failings were from our own government for not sticking to the values that 'made our country great'.

It implied that the Chinese were the ones that benefited, not the ones that caused it.

Its always about politics everywhere and anywhere in all governments, no exceptions.

If you look at the whole volume, the jobs outsourced to India are low in production value like tele-sales, marketing reps, graphic designers, coders etc etc. Things which are handled by high school students in USA. The overall volume does add up to anything significant. Its foul to cry about India. Americans should learn to compete by working smarter.

Indian economy is not all about call centers. Many people in the top level management of some of the largest incorporation are actually from the IIMs and other premier B-Schools in India. And you really think CG works or programming as required in software companies can be done by high school students of any country, let alone US....Either you are revolutionizing educational systems here or a complete fool.
It will be a revealation to know that the software and CG related companies don't need UG/PG guys, just high school pass outs will do....Thats how things happen back in your country???

^^^^^^Come on that ad is demonizing china. That ad could have been made without mentioning china .
