Donald Trump has caused further outrage by saying "the UK is trying hard to disguise their massive Muslim problem".

The presidential hopeful also told UK politicians they should be "thanking him" instead of "pandering to political correctness".

Mr Trump attracted criticism from around the world when he said he supports temporarily stopping Muslims from coming to the US.

He also praised columnist Katie Hopkins for her "powerful writing on the UKs Muslim problems".

At last count, more than 420,000 people have signed a petition calling for Donald Trump to be banned from entering Britain.

Mr Trump gave a statement to the Telegraph, saying he "only said what needed to be said", adding he will "work very hard and effectively to defeat terrorism".

Here is his statement in full:

I have done so much for Scotland, including building Trump International Golf Links, Aberdeen, which has received the highest accolades, and is what many believe to be one of the greatest golf courses anywhere in the world. Additionally, I have made a significant investment in the redevelopment of the iconic Turnberry Resort, which will have massive ballrooms, complete room refurbishments, a new golf course and a total rebuilding of the world famous Ailsa course to the highest standards and specifications of the Royal & Ancient. If they were going to do this, they should have informed me prior to my major investment in this £200 million development, which will totally revitalise that vast region of Scotland.
The UK politicians should be thanking me instead of pandering to political correctness. In fact, in an article out today, many police officers in London have come forward to confirm their fears of terrorism. I only said what needed to be said, and when I am elected no one will be tougher or smarter than me. I will work very hard and effectively to defeat terrorism.

I have respect for the Muslim people and have great friendships with many Muslims, some of whom I do business with --- but they themselves admit there is a major problem with radicalisation. As President, I will work with Muslim representatives to determine a solution to eradicate the terrorism that has plagued the credibility of the Muslim community.

Furthermore, as the definitive front runner (with large leads in every poll) in the race to become the Republican nominee for President of the United States, and as the person leading in the polls head to head versus Hillary Clinton, my focus is to Make America Great Again!

It is easy to claim you have no 'muslim problem' when you have virtually no muslim population. If you define having a significant muslim population as the problem, then Mr. Trump may be correc
t.

Note the variation in UK numbers: it matters a great deal what the exact wording of the survey question was for the question on 'no religion'. Seeing the big differences between census en BSA survey, comparing the BSA years shows non-religiousness remaining stable, christian beliefs are other religions are stable, other beliefs on the rise (which may be Islam, judging from Census data).

I hate any religious stats, the UK must have about 10-15% of people that are religious and they are almost all "minorities" or immigrants, Christianity is dead in the native British apart from reformed prisoners/drug addicts and old people. Polish/African immigrants are the only significant Christian population in the UK.

Then of course muslims/sikhs/hindus, cant amount to much more than 10-15%. I know no one (British born black or white) that is religious, I have 4 churches within a 5 minute walk and 3 of them are empty 24/7 and one is busy on sundays but it has people from a few mile radius that come to it because its a strange community church. Religion in the UK only exists in those that are born with it, the Poles, Africans, Arabs etc who dont get a say in what to believe are the only true believers these days, dont include old native British as they are almost dead.

As such there is no real problem here with any religious group, sure there are no go areas in London but its London, I wouldnt go into loads of places in that city for a multitude of reasons, most likely scumbags tryng to rob you. Trump can get fucked really, I am an outspoken anti-Islamic person but ive had very few bad encounters with muslims in my life apart from their behavior/rudeness, dont attack the people, attack the actual "message".

Belief, regiliousness and church attendence / worshipping / prayer are conceptually different. Hence the importance of asking the right question(s) and not blindly comparing this survey with that and the other.

Belief: Mental acceptance of and conviction in the truth, actuality, or validity of something.
Religiousness/Religiosity: Having or showing belief in and reverence for God or a deity.
Church: the building(s) aside, the company of all Christians regarded as a spiritual body or a specified Christian denomination (e.g the Presbyterian Church) or a congregation, or the clergy, or the ecclesiastic (non-secular) power.

Good point, if West want to promote secularism then it should seek spread of liberal views which will minimize importance of religion in modern day. By emphasizing that all religions are man-made(whether one believes that or not). But that is the strategy that could make Western Muslims more liberal. If there is a divide and Muslims feel isolated it will only make some Muslims have stronger faith. The last thing we want is a Muslim vs non-Muslim clash across the world. We would be degrading the value of our lives and become cavemen once again.
