Coming out strongly against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on Monday said he does not want him to become India’s prime minister as he does not have secular credentials.

The prominent economist also criticised Mr. Modi’s model of governance saying he did not approve of it.

“Yes, I don’t want him,” Dr. Sen told CNN-IBN in reply to a question on whether he wanted him as his prime minister.

“As an Indian citizen I don’t want Modi as my PM... He has not done enough to make minorities feel safe,” he said.

On being asked why he did not want so, Dr. Sen said, “He could have first of all been more secular and he could have made the minority community feel more secure.”

“No, I don’t approve of it... I don’t think the record is very good. I think I don’t have to be a member of the minority in order to feel insecure... We Indians don’t want a situation where the minority feel insecure and could legitimately think that there was an organised violence against them in 2002. I think that is a terrible record and I don’t think Indian Prime Minister as an Indian citizen... Of who has that kind of record. No, I do not.”

Dr. Sen said physical infrastructure in Gujarat may be good but Mr. Modi has not done enough for minorities or for the majority. He also said that the Gujarat model needs to do much more on the health and education sectors and bring equity.

He said Mr. Modi could have made the majority community feel that they are not maltreating the minority and going against the long Indian tradition of being tolerant.

“He could have also taken both of the facts that Gujarat record in education and healthcare is pretty bad and he has to concentrate on that... as much as he is concentrating quietly as it has happened on physical infrastructure,” the Nobel laureate said.

BJP recently anointed Mr. Modi as chairman of its election campaign committee.

I respect Sen. I used his method of looking at issues from a political, economic, and social standpoint throughout University. However I disagree with him. Modi deserves a chance at becoming PM. The congress have been corrupt, inept, and spineless. They need to be thrown from office in order to be taught a lesson.

Why is this subject coming up again & again ?

To me it seems as a ploy to pre empt the minds of voters. The BJP too has worsened the case by talking of a PM even before it has won its 1st seat.

I wish they would shut up & work towards the elections instead of jabbering so much.

We need to be now out of this bloody cheap communal behaviour. The Act or Omission both are wrong. whether BJP directly support the Hinduism or on name of secularism congress wants the votes of muslims both are wrong. Are we real secular, ask the both BJP and Congress what is there plainning for five yrs. instead of worst non secular behaviour. they just cross the limit when they breach the limit of Nation first theory.

I think let them to go on http://india.gov.in/topics and let them tell what is their Idea for each and every subject and what are there Ideas for that. Let the members to give thier Ideas for the different topics or heads.

like River link Yojna. punishment of hanging (capital punishment) for rape cases, Internet security and virus scanning scanner for free from trojans of world webs, more SEZs and more thorium based nuke power station...etc..

@ Amtarya sen
sir U r international personality and may U want to show the great ness of the India and its secular ideas running in mind of people of India. But right now if we want to save our economy we strongly need modi, if we loss it hardly we get such leader after that in twenty to fifty yrs. There is need of Foreseen rather than short mindly feelings.

One a Gandhian joker who thought him fasting would change the country (and ended up with muck on his face when his own pet Khujliwala used his name and started a political party that supports militants and miscreants)

And another a believer in a failed ideology (Leftist Socialism) that kept India in gutters for years.

Now when someone has showed his stupid protectionist and archaic ideology a thumbs down, the socialist is pissed.

________

Bro you don't need PHDs in economics and nuclear science to run a country well; you need dedication, will-power, patriotism and decisiveness to run the country.

Personally I blame the curriculum and faculty of the Cambridge University, as I'm yet to see an alumni of that university has a touch with reality or practicality in their approach. :D

His opinion, his right, he can vote Mr Dumbo, but let us all ask him one Q.
How many times he gave his vote in any elections?
