BEIJING: China's defence ministry has distanced itself from discussion in the state backed media about a "small-scale military operation" to remove Indian troops from the disputed Doklam area+ on the Sikkim border.

"This kind of reports represents the view of the media and think-tanks. For official information please refer to the statements of foreign ministry and defence ministry spokespersons," China's Defence Ministry spokesman Sr. Col. Ren Guoqiang told an Indian media delegation here on Monday.

He was replying to a question from Indian journalists about recent comments from a Chinese think tank expert, Hu Zhiyong, which were published by the state backed Global Times.

"China will not allow the military standoff between China and India in Doklam to last for too long, and there may be a small-scale military operation to expel Indian troops within two weeks," Hu, a research fellow at the Institute of International Relations of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, was quoted by the paper recently.

The statement showed that both the defence and foreign ministries were uneasy with the intense pressure being built up by hawkish sections of experts and state backed media because they reduced the flexibility of officials engaged in negotiation.

The ministry did not send out any fresh threatening signals during a two-hour long interaction with an Indian media delegation. Ren questioned India's refusal to understand China's standpoint on the dispute but did not talk about any military consequences of the standoff which has already crossed 50 days.

But it struck to the stand expressed by Chinese leaders and officials that Indian troops must withdraw from the disputed spot in Doklam and no one should not underestimate China's resolve to defend its territory.

"We have all the legitimate rights to construct the road in Chinese territory," Ren said during a two-hour interaction with Indian journalists organized by the All China Journalist Association.

The standoff took place after China started building a road in an area claimed by Bhutan. Indian troops intervened both because they are present in the area to support Bhutanese troops and also because the Chinese road building would give China a military advantage in the area.

Ren said China had informed India about the road making plans twice on May 18 and on June 8 but got no response. He did not furnish any evidence about notifying India expect saying that there is a "very mature and stable border exchange mechanism between China and India".
Asked why China felt the need to inform India if it regarded the area as Chinese territory, Ren said it was done out of goodwill.

Ren rejected a suggestion from a journalist that China has acquired an image of an expansionist nation owing to its China Pakistan Economic Corridor, which is violating Indian claims over Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, Ren said. "This is not in our genes."

If China finds Paks claim on PO K as legitimate then we see Bhutan's claim on DokLam as legitimate, and if China is just building a road on Paks territory then we are just fulfilling our agreement by protecting Bhutan's territory.
They can brought up any ancient ding dong map but for us it's a Bhutanese territory.

That's more like it,..... Slowly now... Yes, a little to the left... No no.. a little right...! Yes that's it.

Nice to see them climb down on solid mother Earth from the clouds they were flying in.

.
Once Xi is assured of second term...everything will cool down.

.
PLA knows its helpless, there is infact little they could do militarily. No choice but to compromise or standoff continues indefinitely.

. . .
Global Times might be state backed but it's certainly not representing the state on Doklam issue.
The state is finding an honorable way out of it.
