Doha appreciates Iran for opening airspace to Qatari planes

FNA- Qatar’s Defense Minister Khalid bin Mohammed al-Attiyah appreciated Tehran for helping his country during the era of sanctions imposed by the Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, on Doha and allowing the Qatari planes to use Iran’s airspace.

“We thank Iran for opening its airspace for Qatari planes and supplying some food to the local market,” al-Attiyah said in an interview with the Arabic website of the Russian news agency, Sputnik.

Al-Attiyah conditioned the lifting of a blockage imposed on his country by four Arab states before engaging in any dialogue with its neighbors.

Qatar has been reeling under a blockage imposed by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain since last month.

The four states accuse Doha of interfering in their affairs and supporting terrorism, a claim dismissed by Qatar, which contends that the blockade was in violation of international law.

“Lifting the siege should precede any dialogue,” al-Attiyah said in an interview with Russia Today.

“If the blockade countries remain reluctant to lift the siege, Qatar will be compelled to resort to the available international legal procedures to lift it,” he said.

The Qatari minister ruled out the relocation of the Al-Udeid US military base from his country.

“The US-Qatari relations are strong,” he said, going on to deny that the “acceleration of the deployment of Turkish troops in Qatar was in anticipation of any military escalation against Doha.”

“The Turkish and US military presence in Qatar doesn’t pose any kind of sensitivity, at all,” he said.

The Qatar minister argued that the blockade states have relied in their escalation on US President Donald Trump’s Twitter postings.

“They forgot that the U.S. is a country of institutions, most of which is the Department of State, which has explicitly supported the Qatari’s position,” he said.

Shortly after the four Arab states cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, Trump appeared to take credit for the move.

“So good to see the Saudi Arabia visit with the King and 50 countries already paying off. They said they would take a hard line on funding extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar. Perhaps this will be the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!” Trump wrote on his Twitter.

In a series of tweets, a member of the Saudi royal family has defended the former Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Nayef, while lashing out at the apparent partnership between Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Using the hashtag "No to harming Mohammed bin Nayef", Abdelaziz bin Fahd, the son of the former Saudi king Fahd, appeared to be addressing the deposed crown prince, giving him advice about what to do.

On 20 June Mohammed bin Nayef, a powerful figure in Saudi Arabia's security apparatus for the past two decades and the next in line to the throne, was ordered to step down by King Salman.

The high-stakes power grab placed sweeping powers in the hands of the 32-year-old Mohammed bin Salman, also known as MbS, and appeared designed to speed his accession to the throne.

According to reports, the king ordered bin Nayef to step aside in favour of his son MbS, because his alleged addiction to painkilling drugs was clouding his judgment.

But sources told MEE that these claims are untrue. Instead they believe these stories were fabricated by Saud al-Qahtani, secretary to the royal court, who reportedly arranged briefings to release allegations against MbN to the media.

At the same time, a senior Saudi official told Reuters that the account of bin Nayef's drug problem was totally "unfounded and untrue in addition to being nonsense".

Although bin Fahd did not clearly refer to MbS in his tweets, his posts have been seen by observers as an attack on the new crown prince who was appointed by royal decree on Monday to run affairs of state in the absence of his father while he holidays in Morocco.

MbN remains under house arrest to keep him out of circulation after being overthrown, with no visitors allowed except close family members.

According to reports, he is not taking calls, and was only granted permission to visit his elderly mother with the new guards assigned to him.

Anger towards the Emirates
In a widely shared tweet published on Monday, Yusuf Bu Khalifa, an Emirati social media activist, posted a photo of King Salman next to that of UAE ruler Mohamed bin Zayed. Commenting on the photo, he said: “Take it from me, if you want to get to Saudi Arabia, you’ll have to get past the Emirates first.”

The tweet was seen as a reflection of the strengthening of bilateral ties between the two Gulf countries and their rulers.

But in an angry response by bin Fahd, the Saudi royal lashed out at the Emirates and its ruler bin Zayed, comparing him to the devil in a new series of tweets posted on Tuesday.

of course not. the practice is absurd and humiliating. I can imagine only ignominy and corruption as what motivated Pakistani political class to give permits to the qataris in the first place.

that qataris have abused their wealth and trod on Pakistani pride in the past and have not behaved any more fairly and nobly than the Saudis is no reason for your country to shy away from making a moral and political statement on the Saudi-led embargo against Qatar, though, even though I hate the idea that anglosaxons shall become the chief beneficiary of any possible reconciliation and not iran or Pakistan.
